Both are useful for backlinks and traffic. But with the paid directories you can get your result very fast.

Both type of directories are good choice. Google now prefer natural links and doesn't like paid links.

If you feel your content is good enough then go for a paid directory. If its just backlinks for the sake of them then go for the free option but be prepared for the chance that your site will disappear amongst the dross that appears on them.

Page rank is not a good indicator of a quality website. It is easily manipulated so they can take advantage of persons like yourself who believe PR=quality.

Submitting our sites in directories is also an important part of SEO. I you have enough budget then select paid directories otherwise submitting your site in free directories but paid and high PR directories are best.

The only thing I would add to this, that many people miss with the use of the word "maintenance" is that paid directories with branding, have marketing budgets, they utilise a fair proportion of review fees (profits?) on advertising spend. So they re-invest in promotion of the directory to get more eye-balls viewing the listings.

For this reason, Paid directories offer something that free directories do not.

Free directories offer you a free listing, but they cannot get you the same exposure as a paid directory that has a marketing budget.

That's the real difference between the two.

    Hello folks
I see what Matt say here about paid directories http://www.searchenginejournal.com/matt-cutts-explains-how-google-handles-paid-directories-video/40511/

Then as we see if you pay to your site be listed in some paid directory is not good, because Google will put your PR down. Now here is another one big problem what is then with advertisements.

Example if you have buysellads.com banners on your site, then if somebody want to buy a banner space that is against Google TOS too, because that buyer will receive visitors to his site through that banners(paid or no paid banners) etc...

Conclusion: Google then can only allow blog comments, writing articles (manually, unique description) and if you pay for any service you will be in big problems with your website.
This is only my constatation i want to hear from other people here is this true or not. Thanks

That is absolutely not what Matt had said. He said that directories that sell PageRank will be penalised but directories that have high standards of editorial discretion will not. That is the difference between quality paid directories who are charging a fee for editorial reviews, and those who set up directories on expired domains and charges a fee for its PR.

Paid directories approve at the same time but free directories takes lot of time to approve. Sometime free directories are not approve even in the six month so paid directories are good choice.

Paid have the do follow rules so its better not to waste time on the free ones and moreover they are not considered well with Google as well.
