I'm wondering how many categories you guys have on your directories? I know an0n has won with over 200k I think or 2million maybe. And also did you guys use a dump program to upload all categories or did them 1 by 1?

I have over 500. Yes, I've used some dump originaly, but I've changed some, added others and deleted other.
Also bare in mind that if we're talking of phpld, there's a lot of difference between v2 and v3 as the job of populating v3 properly may take a lot of time.

I like to stay ahead of the listings, say a ratio of listings to cats of about 4 or 5 to 1. Have enough cats so that your submitters will find something appropriate to submit to, but not so many that your site is almost entirely empty. Too few cats and they are way over-crowded. Find a middle ground.

i have loads, if i was you i would start with a few hundred main and sub categories and then add more sub-cats and more niche sub-sub-cats when you start recieving submissions that could be sorted into that niche.

    How deep would you go?

I only want my categories only up to 3 levels, however none of my directories have reached level 3 yet.
