Do bad links really affect ranking? Is that really true, or Google just ignores it.

Yes it does, one of my client's site got sunk in the finance niche. When I studied its links, the site suddenly gain over 30k more links for its primary keyword with links coming from forum pages packed with porn, gambling, drugs. I also have done rep management projects in sinking sites as well. But so far it mixed results, some sites you can build hundreds of thousands of links and still holding up, while others can be sunk literally within a day or less. So bad links can in fact kill a site nowadays, at least a weak site.

Google hates bad link like broken link or dead links, as they are not user friendly, affects website's conversion rate, and also stop Search Engine Crawlers, so make sure you don't have these kinds of links..

Definitely. It's like having bad friends... sooner or later you gonna get home stoned and drunk too much and your wife is gonna kick you out :p hehehe
Now seriously, let's understand first what is a bad link.
Bad links are any link coming from a penalized, not trusted or not relevant to you niche sites. Google will count any of this as bad links which by association will influence in a negative way to your ranks.
Try to keep you backlinks as narrow as possible in terms of targeting.
    Hope it helps!

Yes, bad links are bad as the word says, it would give bad effect..

You should have ability to recognize bad links first, many newbies don't understand quality of links and they may classify a quality link as bad link..

If any link has pr0, pr na, it doesn't mean that it is a bad link, if the link is relevant then it is good link, you should link to that, but please try to maintain natural aspect of link building today, using same anchor text, building same number of links at daily basis wouldn't help a lot.

As Google said that you just create content, ranking would be decided based on content, so you have to understand this statement, as content is very important today, if you are giving time in on-page optimization, quality and fresh content then this is the best way of optimization today.

But if your site has 500 good links and 2 bad links, then it won't affect at all, it would look more natural.

If you know how to hide the "bad links" you can probably get away with it. However, if you blasted your site with thousands of links overnight (low quality ones), that's going to raise a red flag and affect your site.

Why is a PORN backlink bad?

If the backlink from the PORN site is a PR9, why would it be considered a bad link? Because it's porn? Because its not niche related? Because its PORN?...lol

    Holla!

I dunno, maybe porn links distract the google workers too much? It just doesnt make sense to me how some links can be seen as bad, as links on other sites are not necessarily controlled by the site owner and its all too easy for others to damage my site.

As I understand it, if someone at random types my URL into a free backlink builder site, then my sites potentially damaged beyond repair.

I hang out with you lot on this forum, where some members are good, and some are just spammers... but that does not make me a good spammer...

Google always hated bad back links, if you site has number of bad back links then Google will treat your website as a spammer and your website's ranking may be affected quickly because of these links.
