Lets say I have a website with a long name but with good content and ranks very very well in Google. itsareallylongdomainforbusiness.com But I am changing the name of the business, how do I best leverage the good ranking SEO properties of the first name and focus that weight towards: shortdomain.com Is it possible using redirects? I will be moving the content over to the new site.
That was possible. Ar first you will notice a decrease on your ranking but that was normal. I done this before and yes it was indeed better to prefer using short domain instead of very long domain name like yours.
SO So I should copy the content to the brand new short domain, and put a redirect on the long domain, and I will be able to bring the new short domain to the same ranking as the old one?
Ofcourse you can using redirect to a shorter domain name . But it will be more hard for you to build your backlinks. After EDM in Google Algorithm changes , I believe the domain do not give much weight, all mostly from your content.
The best thing is to use a .htaccess redirect from the old name to the new one, copying all the content in its entirety to the new site. The redirect will pass on most of the link juice from the old site to the new one.
You can use .htacces file to redirect from old domain to new domain. you can add 301 redirect of your old site to new site.
