Does site downtime have effect on SERP?

This is probably discussed somewhere else before; I would appreciate if someone has definite answer for it.

How does site downtime effect on SERP?

I signed up for a creepy host…until recently I did not notice my sites were down 2/3 times a day. Few weeks ago I noticed it and set up one of those site trackers - I found out my sites are down at least 2/3 times everyday and for 10 to 15 minutes.

I already signed up another hosting and process of moving my sites. But I was wondering if I leave my developing site on this host (since I have 6 months left on this hosting contact)
Would it have negative effect on SEO standpoint?

Yes, it will have a negative effects, affecting your rankings. There have been many documented cases where Google lost faith in the quality of the source so just dumed it altogether until it became stable again.

It just makes sense, if the bot visits your site and it is down... you get the picture. I would suggest moving to a quality web host (if that is the problem) or improving the coding (if that is the problem).

    Best of luck! :)

Do you have to pay to track your host uptime? I'd like to track it to because I work on my site a lot and notice that the host sometimes goes down for a few seconds to a minute. What service did you use?

It does effect with possible lowering of your PR. My site used to be down regulary as i kept switching between hosting and with the result that my blog PR from 2 went to 0. :(

Obviously if a spider comes to visit your site and its down it will move you down the serps... since you dont have hte keywords or anyhting else in yourp age anymore...

It shouldn't affect PR. THats gauged entirely differently. I also don't think occational downtime is a problem, all servers go down at times. No doubt Google will try several times. But if they keep finding you down, Google seems to use this as a reason to add you to the suplimentals. That's bad.

If your site is only occationaly down I wouldn't worry about the search engines much. If it's down frequently, then it's time to move on, hosting is cheap and there are a lot of good ones out there.

There is siteuptime.com . They allow you to track one site for free but you have to pay if you want to track multiple sites

    What danger?

My blog and site are visited everyday by Google bots and due to frequent down, it triggered a negative feedback for my site. This could be the reason for my PR being down. How else you will explain its PR0 from PR2. My other blog on other server gained PR and it is up all the time.

    I use http://host-tracker.com/ and http://www.siteuptime.com/.
Both has free account option with limited functionality but was good enough for me.

I like http://www.host-tracker.com over siteuptime.com because it allows checking your site every minute. For siteuptime.com, I guess it is every 30 minutes.
