    Should .net be used as a general purpose name or for internet service related reasons only? What is the better fit?

    .net is used generally for any kind of sites normally if the .com domain you are looking for isn't available then people just go for .net as they hold good value as well though not equal to .com

    .NET has become completely generic. You can use the .NET domain name for any kind of website you like!

    As mentioned here it's best to grab the .COM if you can, but .NET is by no means a bad alternative.

    I suppose net could stand for internet. Since any type of site is on the internet, then net is a good substitution for .com I did see a book in the bookstore which insisted that it be used for hosting companies etc..

    Hi

    Here are what domain Domain Extensions stand for:
    .com = Company
    .net = Network
    .org = Organization
    .info = Information

    And the best domain names in order would be: .com, .net, .org, .co,

    Thanks

    .net domain name no longer become only used by internet service provider.
    It been accept by most of people and the .net domain name become general after .com is very limited.
    After .com domain keywords is mostly available, people start moving to register for .net and .co domain name to replace .com .

    Yeah, and then there are the country level domains.

    But, if the .com is taken, and .net is available, then take it.

    There are no specific restrictions that you can only use .net domain names for Internet services .
    You can use any TLD for any purpose. If the .com for the one that you are looking for is not available then just go for .net or .org, whatever suits you the best.

    Also, i have seen better results in rankings for exact domain names with .net extensions.

    But I think .org should be used for non-profit (though not required). However, .net could stand for net. as in (generic) "internet" or for a network.
