there is not at all any problem in redirecting your 404 error page to home page. but make sure it is a 301 permanent redirection rule.

First I totally agree with uday make sure you add 301 redirection. You can easily find it on Google webmaster guidelines. In addition to it for proper application you can also use SEOMOZ step by step guidelines.
You can not redirect all your deleted pages to homepage.Redirect your old page to new page.If you have move your content to some other page add redirect of 404 page to that page rather than homepage.
If your site is in wordpress use Plugin "Redirection".

No always use 301 permanent Redirect.Temporary redirects are confusing for crawlers like 302,303 etc.
"404 error page".Redirect the old page to new page rather than redirecting all to homepage.

well said zeshan.., hope this clarified your doubt.., to the above context, a lil more info want add. 301 is a permanent redirection example - www.example.com/def.html (this page is redirected) to www.example.com/ (this page permanently) this means when ever crawler visits the def.html page are automatically redirected example.com page by replacing def.html page with example.com in their INDEX.

But if you do the same without 301 Redirection, Search Engine crawlers will store both the pages def.html and example.com, which might create confusion for Search Engines in giving weightage. (302, 303 redirection)

So, always prefer to have 301 Permanent redirection rule.

Hope this clarified your doubt. let me know if you still need any more info on that.

    thanks,
    uday kiran. i

    @kingsweb
www.example.com/def.html - sending users from this page to this page www.example.com/ghi.html for temporary (to test user or due to some issues) by doing 302 redirection

In 302 Redirection - Search Engines will have both the pages in its data base
SE will not transfer the weightage to other page

In 301 Redirection - Search Engines will replaces the page
SE will transfer all the weightage from one page to other page

    Hope this clarifies your doubt..,

If the page you've created backlinks to is no longer available, then do a 301 redirect from the old page to the new so that anyone who clicks on the link to the old page would be redirected to the new one.
As uday11 mentioned, link juice is transferred from old to new page.

Hope that helps. Have a good day!
