Hi, 3-4 months ago I placed a "scrap" site of 5-10 pages on my hosting package. Didn't build any links, since I'm working on the content and design (only want to launch when I have a substantial quality done already and I only put it online to see how it works - offline you never know for sure how everything works). So: Google is sending me 2-3 visits with keywords, despite having any backlinks at all! Interesting thing... I guess there are domain whois sites that are automatically putting links to URLs, without us knowing it/wanting it etc. So I guess that's the source of traffic. Any more ideas/reasons?
It does not always means that for getting traffic you need backlinks. Make a website, submit something garbage and thumbs up the site on stumble upon, you will get 3-4 traffic instantly on your website. If you are targeting for low competitive keywords and you have written a nice article targeting your keywords you can get ranking for that page without doing any link building.
Make sure it is not Google bots or Google preview. Often such a move looks like a real or a source is suspicious.
Obviously we don't links for traffic. But I am getting search engine traffic with keywords showing up in AWSTATS. That's wicked!
Yes, it is possible, it is due to uniqueness, content, domain authority, there are many factors in SEO, I would say.
