After finishing Codeacademy, one can go to places like Nettuts, SmashingMagazine, AListApart for advanced discourses on Web Design/Development.
From my point of view http://www.w3schools.com/ is the best website to learn web languages. It gives you knowledge step by step with example and the main thing is you can edit that example online and see the result instantly. So you will work on Theory and Practical at the same time.
No they are certainly not (anymore). They are not 100%, but they try to improve. Go to w3fools and look at the stricken out links - Seems like the guys from w3school are willing to work on their mistakes. If this is really the consensus of the whole development community, then the whole community should take a second look at w3schools (and w3fools, last update was December 2012) and re-evaluate.
If you want to learn html and css never use any WYSIWYG editors. Last year I extensively used Dreamveaver but I realized it was too big and not worth using it. This year I have started with notepad++ but I have afterwards found much better editor, also free, Bluefish. It is really good. You can use it for most script languages including Javascript and php, not mentioning html and css as basics. I think it the best html and css free editor at the moment. It supports HTML5 and CSS3. For image editing I use Photoshop although I have lately found free replacement for Photoshop which has the most functions of Photoshop and it is GIMP v2.8.4 (latest version). I strongly recommend this.
i think better to go for a codeacademy for learning html, CSS and javascript. A well organized tutorials with real world examples.
I have been taking eyes over this thread from last few days. Most of the members are sharing their views and suggest many resources for learning web design courses. After comparing all those sites, I found no one is like w3schools.com. This is the best one!
I want to suggest you to use W3school tutorial site the one of the best source for learning HTML. Its provide good guideline of all subject with good detail so you can easily understanding all coding and all HTML tags. I also used it to learn HTML. Best part about the site is you can parctice the code then and there itself. HTML itself is very simple. It's one of the easiest things you can learn. But it won't take you all that far in web design. Essentially, HTML is a set of tags that you use to tell a web browser what kinds of contents you have.
Practice is the best school!!! I have read a couple of books about joomla but when I started to build my website up myself I faced all real problems and I was looking for solutions in google and forums.
Just in case anyone gets confused, the link is actually codecademy.com. I agree though, it's a fantastic resource for learning the basics. The steps are broken up really well and it's very easy to follow along. Plus it's free, which is always nice.
The w3schools.com is such a brilliant place, that it will solve all of your learning requirements. Start with it.
