I personally prefer to outsource my SEO work to a company.

The best advice I can give is pick a company that has a building and staff - that way you know they are serious about their work and not just some guy in his bedroom running scrapebox

If you can't afford to outsource, start small - look at sites in your niche and run their URLS through a website like ahrefs or opensiteexporer and study their back link profile - then try and copy it :)

The "short" version (because I seem to be writing similar so often):
    1. Focus on your content - producing useful, quality and interesting content. Make content for your site (or site's blog). Make content that can be re-used by other bloggers - videos, infographics, etc. So instead of you building links, they link to you.
    2. Have a social media presence. Don't spam it. Don't have fake followers. Engage with your followers, search for people interested in your niche and build contacts (hopefully they also run their own sites, hopefully not direct competitors, but people who might review your product, for example). This is one of the ways you will get your content noticed by other site owners and (hopefully) linked to.
    3. Guest blogging. Do this selectively (is the site spammy? Does it have poor quality backlinks? Are they publishing their own content or just guest blogs?), don't do it for links, but traffic and building a wider audience. Never, ever pay for guest blogging (or for any link, for that matter).
    4. Don't rely upon just Google and Bing, but social media and guest blogging, too.
    5. Avoid spamming. One link naturally given to you by someone else will be much better than the crap links you can spam. In fact, these crap links can do worse than no value and penalise you.
    6. If you have spammed in past (basically, made links yourself), get as many of the bad quality ones removed as possible.
    7. Remember: Quality, not quantity.
    8. Familiarise yourself with Google's Guidelines. Stay within them and your site won't get hurt by any updates.
    9. Read this blog entry by Rand Fishkin about on page SEO and make sure your site is up to these standards.
Put aside any hate you have (and don't let yourself be influenced by other people's hate) of Google and SEOmoz (their blog and YOUmoz contain a lot of ethical methods for content marketing, managing social media, on page SEO, etc), and all the other ones spammers and blackhatters hate due to their own inadequacy.
Good luck. (Not so short, I guess!)

The problem is, Google has changed its guidelines with recent algo changes, effectively recasting many perfectly fine sites as 'spammy' sites subject to de-ranking. Google is NOT Moses, so looking for it for timeless "ethical SEO" is at best shaky over the long term. Dabble in social media, press releases, commenting, guest blogging, etc., and don't make yourself too dependent on Google's current formulas, as they are subject to change.

Hi all I am new here, Ryan that is an excellent post and it is good to see that you have pointed out some of the errors that people often make, eg over enthusiasm by spamming.

Following that guide line will get results and will take time but unless you want to advertise the slow train moving forward is the way to do it.

Melprise I agree being able to adapt is the key, just because something worked in the past does not mean it will work today or in the future. ' Dabble in social media, press releases, commenting, guest blogging' will all help your rankings if done in the appropriate way
