If the system only allowed likes from people you responded to, sure... but that's not the case. I always Like things I run across where someone is helping someone else even if they aren't helping me (as do many others).

Using likes from unique people is a much better way to measure if a user is a contributing member of the site (the old way was by being a member for 14 days and posting 25 posts... which tended to be 25 pointless posts in most cases). :)

I agree with the system, its just one of those habit things. Kind like when I jump between work code and XF code, I always tend to use work prefixes and have to readjust. Creatures of habit, we are.

yep, probably there are lots that aren't interested in..considering the number of replies most of the those threads ge.. They would better post in the threads of people with likes or try to come up with their own smart/interesting threads to get likes..

Helping newbies does have it's rewards even if they can't offer you likes. I used to be active in Introductions forum where I would direct newbies to various forums, and told them to contact me if they had questions. I gained contacts who would never have e-mailed and PM'd me otherwise.
So there are other ways to benefit besides likes. And who knows, you might even gain a friend or two in the process.:)

Ah no i don't mean just by registration date. A combination of criteria. That way more people would be trusted. And thus more newbies who are trying to help would receive more likes (because there are more trusted members in the first place) and so on and so forth. Kinda like a domino effect.

Been really busy recently, so haven't had a chance to do much posting but i will see how it goes and whether i can force help down someone's throat ;D

Don't compare yourself with other users because you have an other status here.
Others like what? Moderators? Premium members?
I liked posts that were helpful for me and I got 3 infractions. How about that?

Actually you only got one, and it was for a thread where you just spun through every person that posted in it and gave them a like.

Some of the posts you liked (in their entirety):

So I guess since you want to go down that road, what exactly did you enjoy about those two posts?

And even then it wasn't even about those two specifically... literally you just liked every post in the entire thread.

Either way, you got ONE infraction, not 3.

    One infraction of 3 points.
I liked every user (once) who had the time to give opinions about my site. For me those were all helpful. How are you going to disagree this?

I'll disagree that a post that was entirely "nice" was of much help to anyone. :)

Others such as myself (and I am sure there are other people) give likes to genuinely useful posts, even if they don't benefit me, but are going to be useful for someone else.

No idea why you are blubbering about the like system.

I'm being patient on getting likes. Hoping that somewhat someone may find one of my posts useful one day ;) lol My opinion on the new like system is it's really a good idea to further build a quality post and quality members here on the forums. We deserve it. :)

    Anyone or anyone else?
If anyone, than I already told you, those posts were helpful for me.
If anyone else (except me), than I can't speak for the others. Do I have to ask 671k users here if a post I want to like is helpful for any of them? Sorry for the sarcasm, but this is what you said.
Seriously, this is exactly, "like what I (you) want or else get infraction.
It looks like you created a system that was not as expected.

Than why are you getting yourself involved in this uninvited? It is a rhetorical question. There is no need from you to reply.

If you want a private discussion, there's the conversation button.

A rhetorical question? More like a misguided belief because people actually do like posts that are good, even if they don't directly benefit.

And there's me thinking this is a public forum, didn't realise you had to be invited to get involved in a thread

Didn't you realize I quoted a specific person/use (admin in this case) when I asked those questions?
