I read on SEOmoz blog that it's important to connect all the elements together (SEO, brand, social media, web content etc.). Directory submission still has some influence, but it is not as effective as it once was, far more efficient is forum posting, blog commenting, article submission, guest posting etc. The main thing is to register your site to quality directory such as DMOZ. Most SEO continues to offer directory submission.

Directory Submission will work for your site only if you submit your site in high pr directory sites.

I think directory submission works. But good quality directories are counted more. Dont submit using automatic softwares to some crap directories.

I think it all plays a part. Let's say there is no more SEO value through directory submissions. It will still help you if you're a small business by potentially connecting other people with your business. So I don't think it will hurt you, but I do see some help in posting directory submissions when you are doing other things to boost you SEO.

Usually short content do not give much weight same to classified. But one thing you need to know the advantages of directories are where showing to google that your business are from local.
This help you to rank better in the specific country search while google likely will advantages those local business to rank higher .

Directory submissions now a days is to build backlinks. However, due to the spam Google has stopped giving value to most of the general web directories.

You can submit to as many directories as you like; but (there is that word again) your submission must not have the same content, both A. word-for-word and B. topic-for-topic (ie: spinners relocating content and substituting synonyms wont work).

So submit away; but you must have content that is truly distinctive on each directory or Google will simply mark each of your submissions as 'Not Selected' for its index status and there will be no point to your efforts...

Directory submissions still works. It's still a good method of getting backlinks, but it's not as effective as before. You need to mix it with other backlinking methods so that you end up with a variety of quality backlinks from various sources.

Hope that helps. Have a good day!

Directory submissions certainly will not get you penalized. However, they generally do not have much value any more as Google has reduced the value of such links and as directories in general are used less than ever before (people use search engines, social media etc. to find what they want).

That said, submitting to some of the better directories might help. However, I would not put too much into it.

But the directory must be of High PageRank too otherwise it wont have any effect on google spiders when they do the crawling stuff for updating rank....
