A Forum Or A Directory - Which One ?.

In some of my previous posts I asked you a few things about forms and Web directories but now I would like to ask you a few questions about which one of the two would be more lucrative to do. Your answers will help me make a final decision.

    - Is a forum or a directory easiest for a beginner to make up ?.

    - Which one of a forum or a directory is the easiest to monetize ?.

    - When considering a forum or a directory if I decide to make up a forum is it difficult to get moderators to help you or do they need some kind of financial incentive.

    - There are so many forums and directories on all kinds of subjects on the Internet and many of them are on my hobbies and interests so I was just wondering if someone would be so kind as to give me a list of the more popular ones so I could compete and have a better chance at success.

My main hobbies are photography (all aspects of it) , computers (all aspects of it) , inventing things and wood work/creativity in general.

Anyone who has any ideas or suggestions please let me know.

    Thanks Craig

Directories are a thing of the past. I don't recommend you build one. Too hard to make money with and real internet users won't use them.
Forums are very hard to get started, populated.
In most cases you will have to pay people to be moderators.

Looking at your list of hobbies, I would recommend you to make a blog for each hobby.

I have Heard that blogs have to be updated on a regular basis whereas websites less so.

Any type of site needs to be updated regularly. Especially if you want to rank high in search engines.

If you need to choose one, go with a forum. If you don't mind talking to yourself for a couple of weeks then you'll be fine. Once you get about 10-20 topics with number of replies in each category, buy some banner space on related sites and you should see some new members every day.
A forum is hard to monetize though and it's kinda only profitable if you can promote your other sites with it.

Its pretty much, the same I feel, because forums need to keep getting moderated. Even you have moderators, you`d still have to check due to spammers. Its actually a 'never ending battle'.
