How To Create An E-Book - What Free Software To Use?

Discussion in 'Products & Tools' started by bad_bob00, Feb 19, 2008.

    Hi there,

I've written an ebook using Microsoft Word and have converted it to a PDF file, however when I view the PDF file the hyperlinks don't work. Anyone got any idea why this is?

What software do you recommend using for creating eBooks?

    Thanks for any help.

I have never created a ebook with pdf but I have worked with it and I think to add a link to it there is a tool in the menu bar called Link Tool

It should be located under the advanced editing menu.

You then have to click and drag and drop where you want the link.

    Then choose your Link Type

    Hope this helps.

Use a free trial software named: pdf Writer
Try to search it in Google.

You can create PDFs - even password-protected ones without all the extraneous junk that MS Word injects into everything it creates.

I even made a fully-illustrated f'ree tutorial on how to do this process and you can get it here: ebookcreating.com if you like.

    Hi

One great thing, for me, about using Word when creating a pdf is that you can create a Word Theme - having your own Heading 1 size and colour, Heading 2, Heading 3 etc and your own bullet styles etc etc. Then when you make your pdf it's all consistant with your branding.

To use the theme you created you save it as a Style Set which you invoke by selecting Change Styles in the Styles tab, hovering over Style Set and selecting your saved style.

It's worth Googling for a few tutorials on this. There is a bit of a learning curve, but I am glad I learned it - it's very handy and you end up making nice, consistantly formatted documents.

As far as hyperlinks are concerned, I've had no trouble with those. Just highlight your text, select the Hyperlink item, and type in your url to the Address field.

    Hope that helps :)

Adobe. The basic conversion tools that do a "print to PDF" don't generally convert the links - they deliberately leave out that functionality to sell you the paid-for version. You may be able to work around the limitations by using a free self-pub service like Smashwords, Lulu or KDP.

Here's the free ebook I used as a basis for my education, with a simple "how-to" and without all the upsell and BS: http://scrawlbug.com/free-stuff/ (it's the bottom-right one of those).

Dear bad_bob00, since last few years I use PDFCreator exactly for this. I had tried many others before I finally decide to use it. It is very neat and clean and work without any trouble. Moreover it is 100% Free without any Ad.

You may download it from http://sourceforge.net/projects/pdfcreator/files/latest/download

Hope that it is exactly what you are looking for.

Oooh, that's interesting. I'd never been able to find a reliable free app that converts links properly. Will check that one out - thanks, Shipra!
