Hi, On my web site I have some pages related to a certification for Java. Some other web site takes the content from my site, replaces my AdSense code with theirs then display the page on their web site. Original page 1: http://www.mihaiu.name/2004/sun_java_scjp_310_035_test1/ Copy page 1: http://www.heliograma.com/java/doc/... 1.4 certification exam ! (SCJP 310-035).html Original page 2: http://www.mihaiu.name/2004/sun_java_scjp_310_035_test1/scjp.html Copy page 2: http://www.heliograma.com/java/doc/scjp.html What can I do to stop these people ? From a technical, as well as legal perspective ? Can I somehow use Apache's mod_rewrite to forbid this ? How can I find out what hosts are they using ? I want to write a letter to their host. Any input is appreciated. I don't know what to do about this and this makes me very angry. I worked a lot to write and verify the content for those pages and now somebody has stolen it. Regards, Razvan
I can understand that. I was stolen too. Since that thread I made here, about 5 other websites stole my content too. I didn't made a thread anymore, no because I shouldn't have, but because I just couldn't help me anymore (DMCA forms, stuff like that, and I don't have time for them). If mailings to the owne don't help, asking him to remove your stolen content, it's very hard to fix them (lawyers, trials).
What is DMCA forms ? I am not aware of what "stuff" are you talking about. How about threatening their hosting service ? Is allowed for a hosting service to provide the service to somebody who doesn't respect copyright ? Does anybody know how easy is to start such a trial in Europe ?
This is their WHOIS info: How do I know that they are hosted with dream host ? I never register a domain with my web host (as a policy).
I'm very sorry to hear about your misfortune. I have had similar things happen to me in the past and as a result know what it feels like when someone steals your hard work. You can go about getting this removed by contacting their host and asking the content be removed. Here is a whois I ran on the domain Domain Name: HELIOGRAMA.COM Registrar: NEW DREAM NETWORK, LLC Whois Server: whois.dreamhost.com Referral URL: http://www.dreamhost.com Name Server: NS3.DREAMHOST.COM Name Server: NS2.DREAMHOST.COM Name Server: NS1.DREAMHOST.COM Status: ACTIVE EPP Status: ok Updated Date: 26-Sep-2006 Creation Date: 20-Aug-2005 Expiration Date: 20-Aug-2007 The name servers point to Dreamhost, therefore you'd need to contact them in regards to the issue. I've gone through their site and found you an email you should send your letter to. Give them about three to four days to respond, before sending a physical letter. The address is; DreamHost PMB #257 417 Associated Rd. Brea, CA 92821 USA FAX: 714-990-2600 Don't threaten anyone in your letters, as webhosts are usually quick to pounce on the offending users in these situations. Simply state that you want the offending content removed within twenty four hours, or you'll be forced to directly contact the data center about the issue. If you need help writing the letter, shoot me a PM. I used to run a web hosting company, and I've got a pretty good understanding on how DreamHost would deal with this. As a last resort, you may want to directly contact the user threatening legal action, and posting on your website that heliograma.com is ripping off your content. Please keep us posted, and I do wish you the very best of luck.
First of all, thanks a lot for your advices. I already went to their web site and use the form there to file the complaint. Since I used the form no e-mail has been sent. Hmm… maybe I should use your approach. As it is now, I have no proof that I asked them to remove the content. Maybe I should send an e-mail instead of using their contact form. Does it matter where I am located when sending this letter ? I am in Europe. In these conditions, am I protected by this DMCA law/convention ? Regards, Razvan
Report it to Google, send them proof also along with the complaint and he should loose his account. BTW, why are the copied page showing the ads twice (6 ads on page)
I'm not too sure about the laws in Europe, as I'm currently located in Australia. Another good idea is reporting this to adsense as a last resort, as login stated above.
I also wondered about this. I don't know how they managed that. Having so many ads is against the TOS. The HTML code that invokes the AdSense ads looks OK. Normally they should have only 3 ads per page, but for that site everything is doubled.
If you are still around checking on this thread .... why would I do that ? I will just send the people visiting my site to that bogus site. This looks like free marketing for them. Regards, Razvan
From personal experience you're talking to a brick wall when pleading your case, thus I wouldn't personally bother with adsense. Maybe I was doing something wrong eh?
Not necessarily. You need to keep in mind I'm basing my advise off my own experience. I put in a line similar to that on every page my content was displayed and really didn't lose traffic. Completely up to you, and how you think your target audience will respond.
The European Union and Australia likely honor all laws regarding intellectual property rights. There may be some differences from country to country, but most westernized countries work diligently to uphold the law.
