Only 5% of people trying to make money online succeed?

    Here is why,

Ever go up to a random person on the street and ask them to buy something from you? Maybe, but for the most part this won't work, because you know they may ignore you or worst get upset. Well believe it or not, most people that first start trying to earn money on the web start by doing just that! And guess what? They get ignored. Well I bet if you went up to a family member and asked them to buy something you would have a better chance of selling that item to them rather than the random person.

    Reason?

There is a relationship there and hopefully some trust. So how do you build a relationship, better yet trust with a "potential" buyer? For one, do not throw a "buy this or sign up for that" in their face. How do they know that they can trust you? Try instead to offer them a free service, something that they would be interested in. It does not have to be alot just something that they would appreciate you offering to them. It could be as simple as advice! That is a start that you can not go wrong with, you have gotten their attention and possibly their appreciation.

    Then what?

Make sure you can follow up and stay in contact with them, through a forum, emails, chat, anything! Continue to offer them your service, maybe just so you can answer any questions about what you offered them. You will find that this approach will give you a group of people that will be more receptive to what you want to sell. The second part of this is to continue not to throw your wares into their face, rather figure out a way to dangle it in front of them, as your relationship and trust grows with them, their chance of buying your product will increase. Focus on the person you plan on selling to, not the sale itself.

I think that too many people trying to make money online don't put any work into it. They'll go from buying one guide to the next without ever sitting down to put any work into anything. Even if they come across a great guide, they won't take any action.

It's almost as though some people expect money to magically fall into their laps. The internet can make you fortunes, but you do have to take action.

Very true, I continue to say that it really takes: time, patience, research, and caffiene. Well that last on is optional, most people get taken in by the lure of that easy buck many people promise. They go for it, and don't get the response they would like. Then either get frustrated and give up, or move to the next "set up" to fail opportunity. My advice to any beginner, Do as they
do not as they say. Meaning they are doing something right, but they may not share that with straight out. Simply see what they do and learn from that. Go with what works.

prolly, lol. The use of the percentage is simply to put in prospective the amount of people who have come forward and say they have some level of success online.

Well I consider myself successful because my online ventures allow me to work solely online, after two years of learning and researching. I am not rich, but I sustain my bills and have extra left over.

I was thinking an online success being running successful websites which make triple the average joe working 9-5. im not one of them, but i bet theres plenty of people on dp who do!

But if your able to work at home and be your own boss that is still some achievement :)

That is quite true. Many people go online in search of quick money but they fail to recognize that it needs lot of efforts, research and calmness to start earning online. Also risk is an important factor.

You should probably open a poll and ask how many DP members are making enough money on the internet to be able to survive solely on that income.

No business ever makes a profit in the beginning (actually they have huge debt).

You must continue working. Amazon did not become profitable after more than 5 years.

In Adsense or any other scheme, the only investment is web-hosting and domain name and it can be free if you use free hosting so it is profit from the beginning.

I made a profit in the beginning with my firm. But that's because I was able to minimize startup costs, and my PR background taught me how to promote my services w/o spending a dime. :D It depends more on the type of business you're trying to run than anything. A service-oriented online business might make a great profit very quickly, whereas something product-oriented or content-based might take longer b/c of the cost of stock, shipping, advertising, buying content, etc. You just have to know your niche, your audience, and be prepared to work your ass off.

    absolute truth.

if you treat this like a job for a year, almost anyone will be making more than they would have been with their previous job. treat it like a job. dedicate yourself to 40 hours a week. get an office if you have to.

spend your time reading. read a lot. learn who to trust and who not to trust.

test, test, and test. see what works, what doesn't, and build on what you've learned.

    write content, consistantly.

research new methods of monetization, constantly.

network with people you've learned know what they're talkin about.

don't waste your times with things you don't need to learn. if you want to be in IM, you don't need to learn how to be a fantastic web designer. you'll know what you need to learn when it comes up.

if you have money, don't be afraid of using it to further your business and don't be discouraged if using it doesn't always work out-- eventually one investment will pay for all the others.

be persistant, work hard, learn hard, and anyone can be successful in this bussiness.

people that fail didn't do the things above. my dad was blown away by what I earn. he decided to try it. he created an account at blogger.com. he never made one entry.

sounds to me like people like that are included in the "95% of people fail" statistics.

Online or offline, it's no difference. Hard working people succeed, lazy people do not. It's just a simple fact of life.

"But if your able to work at home and be your own boss that is still some achievement." - Everyone has a different gauge for success. I have been working online for 7 years and made it through some tough times, but it has allowed me to spend lots of extra time with my two kids while they are growing up and to me that is SUCCESSS!

I have some high hopes for the future but it take a lot of time to build up quality income producing sites. My hope is that some of my sites end up helping my income in retirement.

I should also mention that I have let a lot of money pass-me-by over the years because I refused to go into many grey areas that can produce income quickly....I don't have any regrets but sometimes I do wonder if being so honest has held me back.

    good luck!
