I dont run a directory but Id have to say its all part of the game. I do get about 100 spam emails a day but there isnt much I can do about that either.
If you are using apache, it's easy to block a single IP address: http://www.google.com/search?num=100&hl=en&lr=&q=blocking+IP+using+htaccess If you have root access, you could install a firewall, too.
Alright. I don't have root access to the server I don't think. I'm with Dreamhost so would they use Apache?
Is it a directory? Truthfully i have one also and i have tried but hes using dial up so they constantly change and im not going to loss sleep or customers because of an idiot. If i ban all his ips i would endanger others that thier ip my resemble,so i just delete daily. thx malcolm
Yeah I'm fairly certain my website is a directory. ;-) He has been using the same IP address so I just need to find a way to ban that one and see what happens.
Are you running phpLD 2? phpLD3 has the function to ban special IPs, otherwise edit the htaccess file.
The apache way to block ip address is the best thing you could do, i get a couple of spam submissions too, which i don't understand since i delete any submissions that havent paid but i assume its just bots.
Sorry I'm quite new in managing directory website, just one question to ask,how do you know there is spammer in your site? Thanks in advance for replies, peicom
Hi, What type of spam you are getting ? If its related to annoying keywords then you can make changes into the script so it checks for specific words and if they are found then do not let it get submitted in the first place. Just keep on popping the error message saying that your description / title contains spam words or words not allowed. This works really great for me. It has drastically reduced the rate of spam listings i used to recieve. Thanks.
Oh btw using captcha might not help if its the default one for the directory script... bots are programmed to pass that as easy as a couple of milliseconds? Make up your own validation field... its easy.
