Red Flags For Writers: Know when to walk away - and know when to RUN!

Discussion in 'Copywriting' started by Senobia, Dec 30, 2012.

I found this list on the same blog as my previous post about how to know if you're hired a bad writer.

Amazingly enough, you can find every one of these red flags on the Content Creation board at any given time. Sometimes, you can even find every single one of them in the SAME thread.

    Writers, beware!

Again, not my blog. Not my writing. Just some good info I'm passing along.

lol, I have heard these same "red flags" for many other professions especially web design.

    My favorites are-
"this is an easy job should take about 30min" Translation- I am only going to pay an insanely low amount and have no respect for the work it takes to do the job.

"This is a start up company work for nothing today and next week you will be on the top of a great company making $$$$" Translation- So if you are so successful and smart why can't you afford to pay people a real wage to work for you?

My favorites are the ones who want the work done like yesterday, it's so urgent they have the work within a few hours, but expect the writer to wait 3 days or more to be paid. The sad thing is, there are people who will accept the offer for whatever reason(s) they tell themselves to justify their decision to accept the offer.

Senobia, you're posting some fantastic threads recently - all very amusing and unfortunately true...

"This is an easy job for someone who knows what they’re doing”

comes a close second IMHO to

"Writing this article should take you about 20 minutes”

I have to confess that "you've" lost me on this. As far as I know you were utilizing perfect English. "You've" is merely a contraction of "you have", no?

Well, yes. But the first post reads "how to know if you're hired a bad writer....."

Maybe that's how you know...when you see one make a typo in a thread about bad writers. LMAO @ Me.

Part of what I do for a living is proof reading and I completely missed the "you're" in the thread opening post, we both screwed up.:)

Actually I've had this argument MANY times before.:) Technically it should be written this way....proof.reading. Also technically I am a proof/reader.
But colloquially they can be written as either proofreader or proof reader. They are spelled differently in different parts of the world.

Seems you aren't familiar with American English. :)

I use 'proofreader', and I think it's the widely accepted version.:)

    Anyway, an interesting discussion!

    @PassGoSEO,
"Spelt" or "spelled" is a perfectly acceptable usage of an English word. I am not an American or even a native speaker of English, and even I know this.:)

You've done it again I'm afraid. Because you used a plural it should have been written as "The times HAVE passed two comments on this!:)

divadroid! Noooooo! The Times is a company that publishes a newspaper in England. It is a corporate entity, hence singular...

divadroid walks into evil trap set by dastardly passgo

'The time shaved two minutes off this!'

PS, forgot to say that jokes aside, Diva is quite right, opinion is divided on the use of singular/plural for composite entities such as companies, despite the above link. For instance it would be perfectly correct to say 'The government are idiots' even though a government is a singular thing. If it sounds OK, it probably is OK, and 'the government is an idiot' doesn't sound right, because governments are composed of multiple people, whereas 'The government has fallen' is OK, because it's the singular collection of people that has collectively fallen.

That's for the laugh! I love all of the red flags because they are so true. As soon as I read one of them, I just keep going. Some people have no idea what it is to be a copywriter, and in that situation, it's usually going to be work than it's worth. As far as the grammar discussion, the English language is such a great one, but a confusing one at times. :)
