As many of you know, average tablet and mobile traffic is over 10% for websites.

When designing websites for the future, what size should we be considering?

What is the best tablet size to use for demoing websites? 7 inches up to 10.1 inches? Or is it pixels that really count and what's the most popular?

Where do you see 2013 and the future of html/css design for ease of navigation across tablets, desktops and mobile?

I'm interested in knowing what you all think!

    Howdy,

You can make 2-4 different website sizes? e.g.

    • Phone (iPhone / iPod / Android)
    • Small Tablet (iPad Mini)
    • Large Tablet (iPad)
    Happy Holidays!

Your question alone shows flawed thinking in terms of website design -- if you design fluid or semi-fluid with 'layout choke points' -- changing the layout to fit the available screen width -- it should become a non-issue. Designing to a fixed width, or even multiple fixed width, is a steaming pile of /FAIL/ so far as accessibility is concerned...

It is not your place in building websites to just 'choose a width' -- the only thing we know about who will visit a website is that we don't know who will visit a website, as such if you are even thinking any fixed size, you are completely missing the point.

See why starting from some goof-assed PSD typically results in broken inaccessible piles of trash... the 'designer' is only thinking the magical fixed resolution they have chosen, instead of realizing that the entire POINT of HTML, CSS, and websites is device neutral delivery of content. That's why HTML is for saying what things ARE so the user-agent (browser) can best determine how to show it, and you progressively enhance that HTML with CSS for specific targets while retaining HTML's core flexibility.

I'd like to see more people actually learn how do develop websites. Most of them are just thrown-together garbage using code that would have been incorrect 20 years ago, and is just worse now.

Regardless of anything else, if people keep using 1995 code, and using it incorrectly, it won't matter what else they do. Garbage with pretty ribbons on it is still garbage.

The web world in the year 2012 witnessed quite a few changes with people embracing the emergence of new devices in the industry that brought a change to the web content management system. We have seen several new trends appear in web design, one of the most notable being the rise of responsive design. No surprise, responsive web design will only increase. More and more companies are realizing that design and layout needs to change now that more and more people are using different types of devices (tablets, desktops, laptops, mobile phones, etc.).
The rising growth of a wide range of website compatible devices has posed a real challenge to the designers and developers of websites. The challenge – how to consume maximum capabilities of the rising devices along with the existing devices in the market? Well, while the challenge might seem to be demanding, the solution is not. Progressive enhancement offers a complete and competent solution to the rising demand of developing sites adapting to the capabilities of the user and the browser.

smartphones and tablets seem to be changing so often, it's hard to focus the energy on keeping up. One might wonder if spending time on content is better...until things slow down.
