300MB of memory is good enough?

    Hi there Pro's,
I just signed up for a Dreamhost vps trial account for the minimum pack which offer 300MB RAM and unlimited TerraByte of traffic for $15/month.
They also offer extremely cheap SSL certificate for the account ($15). I am not really sure what to think of it cause other hosts offer maximum a pro or business shared hosting in this price range. I am thinking maybe the 300MB RAM is too law but I have no clue since just had shared accounts before. Will I face errors and other problems with traffic increase? Anyone knows for what is good that 300MB and what to expect?

    Thanks in advance!

Depends on what you're trying to do and what you're trying to run. 300mb isn't very much. Also, $15/mo. is extremely expensive for that VPS. You should be able to get a 256mb VPS for around $5 from reputable companies, and 512mb for around $10. Try Namecheap for SSL certificates. They are cheaper.

If you do not use something like cPanel, this may be enough. But it depends on the applications, web sites that you are running. Just monitor your VPS and decide by yourself.

its enough ram for a small vps, and you can easily monitor your usage and always increase it if you need to.

$15 is a little pricey but depends on the quality. sshvm.com offers low end virtual machines -> i have used them before and highly recommend them, ($2 per month for 128ram)
I assure you 128 ram is enough for a few sites that have low traffic stats. While its $2 a month for that vps, yours MIGHT be worth the extra if its fully managed, on a decent raid setup, and offers automated backups. (so cheaper is not always better, and high priced might actually be worth it).

For 128 ram -> 512 ram, the best control panel to use is kloxo. its like a retarded version of cpanel, but its easy enough to use. When i had my kloxo server, the ram was usage was always under 100mb.
If you use cpanel, while 512ram is 'minimum' to get going, to be brutally honest i really recommend at least 700+ ram for cpanel.

Depends on your website and what you plan to do with it. There are many better plans out there. Do a proper research.

What software will your sites be running? 300MB is okay for static sites, maybe a couple dynamic ones. But will not suffice if you plan on hosting several WordPress sites.

I agree with what phxadam said. Also with the $5 VPS id say WSWD would be selling them for that price since he suggested it and its in hes signature that he sells VPS.

I've been using dreamhost VPS for about 2 years now, I now receive about 14k daily visits everyday. I had started with 300mb guaranteed memory and I never had to change the plan, because I use cache plugin to cache my website pages. Just remember red line in your memory graph is actual memory usage, not the other yellow ones. So as long as red line is under 300 mb, you should be good. Don't worry about sudden hikes sometimes, as your server will reboot automatically.

256MB is most of the time sufficient for PHP scripts to run. Of course if you have a chance an budget get a hosting which has 1GB RAM.
