I hope this is the correct forum to post this:

    I came accross this:
    http://ws.arin.net/whois/?queryinput=! NET6-2001-4860-1

These are the IPv6 addresses registered for Google! This is actualy a VERY big range of addresses. This range has 2^96 addresses which is 79,228,162,514,264,337,593,543,950,336 addresses that is 79 billion billion billion or 79 octillion!!!

Any guesses what is Google up to?

i think not 2^96 because 255.255.255.255 = 255^4 maximum ips allowed* = 4228250625 ips. i thin this hex protocol a bit of different for normal series.

master06, this is IPv6 which has a similar but different protocol to the old IP. It does not use the old x.x.x.x notation.
They did this to increase the number of IPs available worldwide. IPv6 has 128 bits address space instead of the old 32 bits of IPv4
If you want read about it more at wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPv6

You're thinking of IPv4. A new version of the IP protocol has been in the works for several years now, called IPv6, and has a maximum of 2^128 different IPs (approximately 5×(10^28) addresses for each of the roughly 6.5 billion people alive today.) And yes, Google owns a chunk of them, as do several other large web companies (Yahoo, MSN, etc.)

ya i m agree with u.the main diff is that old IP protocol was devided in to DIfferent class like A,B,C,D,E and that was the limitation of that protocol.to overcome that limitation this class less protocol introduce.

With ipv6 everything will have a unique ip address. Watches, cars, phones, domains, etc. Makes communication much easier.

And also, ARIN is handing out very large blocks of IPv6 networks right now. Google is just planning appropriately for the future. Who knows what they will do with all of those IPs.

It's not that they want to stop us, it just gives us a wider range of ip's to check. It's the nature of things to come with ip v6. The number of ip's makes it possible to give every web site and electronic device a unique ip.
