Does filtering ads work for anyone?

Does filtering ads work for anyone, I've found a few lists of sites to filter, mostly search engines made for adsense or PPC search engines, but doesn't google automatically sort out the highest paying ads? I thought those only show if nothing else shows up. Am I wrong?

Yes I have found filtering AdSense ads using the competitive ad filter to be highly effective at improving my eCPM. Look for junky looking Ads promoting MFA sites (e.g. keyword.super-great-site.info).

Yup. it has worked for me more then once.

Most people say that google shows ads with the highest paying ones first but i don't think thats 100% true.

I recently added a 250x250 at the top of my site and was getting a bunch of .02 -.07 cent clicks. So I typed in the terms that we're related to my site in google and compared the ads on the first page, second page and third page to the ads shown on the top of my site in the 250x250 and what do you know, this one ad that shows on the 3RD page of google for my search term is showing up as the first ad in the 250x250. I filtered out that site and most of clicks went back to normal. I do this everytime i start to get clicks under .10 cents and it has worked every time.

So in summary, the first ad isn't always the highest paying ads.

    Hope this helps! :)

One of the best things to do is build your own filter by visiting representative pages for your site and finding bogus looking ads. For example here are some domains I found showing up in ads on my site that were for MFA sites:

    best-healthcare.info
    best-price.com
    best4sites.net
    besthomegardensites.com
    click-here-4-best.info
    consumerincentivepromotions.com
    creditmoneymachine.com
    creme-de-la-web.com
    download-it-free.com
    downloadlegal.com
    downloadshield.com
    revolutionarystuff.com

I just wish we were allowed to add more than just 200 domain names. If I could, I'd probably have 400 names in my list.

Well, my current CPC isn't insanely low like other people I've heard, my CPC is about $0.06, it's low I know, but I don't think it's that bad for the type of sites I run. I've heard some people doing as bad as $0.02. Google just seems to keep paying less and less each day :(

I did add that list of 199 on your blog, here's hoping for the best :D

    Thanks,

    - John

So far I haven't felt the need to filter any URLs from my sites.

My CPC is averaging around $.50 so far across my sites. Some sites have lower CPC but I am still not ready to start filtering URLs. I feel my time is better spent creating more content to add to my higher paying sites then to worry about low bids on my lower paying sites.

I would suggest to put up the wide skyscrapper temporarily, and manually type in the addresses of the ads that are being shown. If any of them are MFA sites just filter them out and also do what i did, Check what page on google is the ads showing up. If its showing up on the 3rd or 4th page, chances are its a low paying ad.

I have come to believe that Google is dumping some high volume but low bidding advertisers on their AdSense sites so that they can keep higher paying advertisers for their own search results. There is no doubt in my mind based on the testing I have done that Google does not necessarily place the highest bidding ads on our pages. Our only defense to this is to try and filter out as many of the crappy ads as we can such that Google is forced to dump those ads on someone else.

I had simlar problems a while back & could not understand why I was getting the < 10 cents clicks as my site is niche & keywords are > 50 cents plus
I Investigated all the above but no MFA where advertising on my site realy is a small niche not getting any attention from MFA sites.

This is what I found extreemly simple but I belive the reason for the <10 Cents clicks

When I first researched the cost of search terms for my site
I Built the site around the search term lets say "Elmo TMX"
Clicks for this are lets say $1 as my site evolved I got little traffic for
"Elmo TMX" but clicks were decent >50 Cents as I watched the traffic I saw people coming in on lets say "Elmo doll" I tweaked my site added more "Elmo doll" & got even more traffic but started to get the < 10 cents clicks
at first I thought it was smart pricing 'finaly came to the conclusion I'm just not important enough to get smart priced :) " then I thought about filtering ads but found no MFA sites, Then i added just one single ad on a page hoping to get the highest advertiser still no change.

Then it clicked even though my site started out as a site all about "Elmo TMX"
it was becoming more & More about "Elmo doll" I went & researched the price of clicks for "Elmo doll" & sure enough people were only bidding 10-20 Cents hence google were placing adds relevant to "Elmo doll" & not "Elmo TMX" Anymore. All refferences to "Elmo TMX" ect are just hypothetical to give an example sure you all get the jist

I Would sugest examining exaactly how google sees your site maybe you imagine its all about "Elmo TMX" when in fact the ads you are serving are all about "Elmo doll"

Just wanted to say that filtering MFAs worked for me.. Suggested.

And i also reccomend you to develop your own custom list by looking at the ad on your site. Since competitve filter list is limited, a generic list may miss some important ones.

You dont need to generate the list at the first try, you can create a list then give some time to adsense to show new MFAs and then check your site again and add new ones..
