How long to recover from a Google change/penalty ?

It looks like one of my sites took a hit from whatever Google changed on Nov 16/17. From what I've read this might be a penalty due to site layout (too many ads or not enough content above the fold, etc).. So i'm making changes to the site layout, but does anyone know how long it takes for Google to re-evaluate and re-rank a page after it's changed?
Please specify if you are guessing (and why) or post a link to a source.

i don;t think that can be the reason, i mean i have all of my sites which has ads above fold, even google sent me suggestions today for my sites that i should consider using ads above fold to make most money out of it, i have never seen anyone being penalized for this reason, there would be other issues with your site that got you penalized

Well probably nobody knows for sure, but what I specifically read at one of the SEO sites is that one guy noticed all all of his sites that got hit on Nov 17 had NO content above the fold (ie; all ads) - and this was also the case in the one site of mine that got hit.. so, not just ads above the fold, but nothing but ads above the fold (which admittedly might be a wee-bit too spammy).

There are three things I do to bounce back:

    1. Get slow, legitimate, high quality backlinks. You can either do this yourself or go to a place like Fiverr, many people do it (like this guy)
    2. Add the keywords I want to rank for into the page's content, and make it flow with the text. For example, if I wanted to rank for "how to bake cookies," I would use the opener: "Hello! Today, I will teach you how to bake cookies with little effort!" Google picks up on your keyword ASAP. ;)
    3. Two words: social media! Even if you buy some likes, it'll be well worth it.

Haha my bad! I thought I provided a time frame in there, but I guess not. I'd say it takes about 3 days if you can build backlinks on sites that Google will check quickly.

first check the irrelevant links connect to your site, remove that, and build some relevant links and submit your site to google again after few days , month work.

I've got hit with this also.. As I've asked around, they told me that I need to have more quality contents that will make the pages more useful to visitors and that the ads should not be placed just anywhere in your site. As of now, I'm gradually doing these things hoping my sites will go back to they were before.

Google regularly crawls every site, so keep improving your site, minimize the no. of ads above fold and hope for the best in the coming weeks.

I don't know about Nov16/17 updates from Google, but according to the discussion, came to know that your site hit-ted by Google, but we can't say that it was exactly by Adds in the your site, Of course top fold adds will add some more.
How every have clear analysis to site, including
    - Back links,
    - Internal links & linking system
    - Content over the site

How every Google will consider every change made by webmaster, as it index every change made.
So it will take three to four days to get back to your position
