Well first off, I hope you don't get banned as this thread is informative, albeit misplaced. And second of all you're right. After the recent PR update I had a PR3 (that I bought here) with content drop to N/A. Obviously I can't prove that the domain had fake PR (even cekpr.com showed it as real) but there's no other explanation for it. I had a parked domain gain PR

Long story short I agree, and even though this shouldn't have to be said it's a good idea to keep reminding people and hope they heed the warning.

Backlinks are the the biggest tell tale sign, if a domain has a good backlink profile (high pr backlinks pointing towards it) then it's pr is legit. The more backlinks the better, but it could also have a bunch of backlinks from 'bad neighborhoods' (porn gambling ect...) which is not good.

Every case is different and you need to check it out yourself before purchasing. Just having one or two good backlinks is also not good enough, if a diligent webmaster runs a check on all of his outbound links (high pr domains usually have someone who knows what they are doing looking after the site) and finds your URL on his site with totally unrelated content on it, he might bin it and you have lost your high PR backlink, so no more link juice and your pr will drop.

So the more backlinks the better (as long as they are good quality, high pr) , try and have relevant content on the site so that it stays in context with how the previous owner had it and so that it is relevant to the backlinks pointing towards it. (last part is not a must, I know plenty of people who do not care about this and are dong just fine but ts worth thinking about especially if there are only a few high pr backlinks)

Not always easy, but there are still plenty of gems out there...lot of crap too so be vigilant!

It's true I've seen a lot of clearly fake, high PRs in the last 6 months - since Google's info: operator was knobbled. All the PR verification tools I know of use this operator so they won't work reliably either. I'm pretty sure Google deliberately knobbled this tool :)

I think the only way to verify these very high PRs ie PR6 and above is a manual check of the Goog backlinks and the Wayback archive etc.

wayback machine also fail to find that these domains are fake and have a 301/302 redirect bcoz these fake PR domains are old domains with a previous history on wayback machine
