Directory Submission Pet Peeves

Right now I do all my own directory submissions and don't pay people to do them, so I've done a couple thousand probably. And in doing so many submissions, I've found a few things that just annoy me when I'm trying to do these torturous things as fast as possible :
    • Not being able to find the stupid 'Submit Link' button. I can't stand when it's hidden on the bottom of the page or encrypted into the side bar in 8px font.
    • Having the 'submit' link look just like AdSense and so I accidentally click it. Now I've gotten good at spotting it.
    • Having to navigate to the proper category before submitting. Maybe it doesn't get to any of you, but I hate it. It's so much easier just to find it in the drop down menu, because you waste like 15 seconds finding out that you have to go to the category first, which is a lot of time when doing thousands of submissions.
    • Directories with terrible layouts where you can't find anything. Some just have a list of like 500 categories and you have to try to find the right one and they all look the same.

Those are only a few off the top of my head. Just venting some steam I suppose.

What other things are kind of "pet peeves" to you guys?

I hate it when I can't find the "submit Link" button, or when they change the name to something totally different so you don't click it. I once looked for the button for 10 minutes.

Here is a small tip for finding the proper category fast

do a Google search: keyword site:thedirectory.com
This way you can find the propr category quite fast and you are making sure that the page where you will submit is indexed and cached ;)

I suggest you use a tool who finds the category for you, take a look at this thread.

This is why directory owners have to think when designing their directory, not just put up a skin and a the script.. and wait for submissions.... I made sure the "add url" stands out on my directory and the layout is clean and organized. Everyone should take their time modifying their directory and we'd have a better world :)

    1) Image verification - So annoying as often it says the code is 'invalid code' or the font is not readable & even if everything goes ok it's still a pain in the ass when i'm submitting my many sites. REMOVE IMAGE VERIFICATION FROM YOUR SITE FOR EVERYONE'S SANITY!

    2) Hidden or hard to find the submission page link like others mentioned in this thread

    3) Having to browse to the correct category, choosing the correct category from the submission page is much easier.

    4) No mention of a cost for submitting but you are told to pay after submission.

Actually, I hate the opposite. When you have a drop-down list of about a million categories to search through, it's a real pain. Category selection direct from the add-url page is great for small directories, but it scales really badly. If you have categories that go three or more deep, forget it.

One of my biggest peeves is useless search. You get a lot of directories that will tell you which sites are listed, but not where they are in the category tree. So choosing the right category is made much harder. And there are some directories that don't even have their own search, but rely on a Google search box or whatever.

i agree toopac! Some of those image verification pics are hard to read, some say type it in backwards, some don't accept the correct sequence, etc. that would have to be my biggest pet peeve

Well, imagine if you have a directory with thousands of cats. A drop-down menu is VERY impractical, and ALOT of people will submit to not-the-most-appropriate cat probably due to the long and confusing drop-down. You waste 15 secs? Think about how much time the directory owner wastes moving ALL those submissions that were submitted to wrong categories.

True, I didn't really think about that. I mean more the directories with like only root categories and maybe a couple more, and you have to navigate to them. But directories like the size of DMOZ, a drop down menu is indeed impractical.

If somebody submits to the wrong category in my directory, I delete :).

    My top 3...

    1. If I can't deeplink say so, dang people c'mon that's an easy one.
    2. If you won't put a text counter on the description, at least give me a clue the min and max length you want.
    3. All captcha's should be text based - down with image captchas!
