I think the best way to get adverstisers or sponsors is to provide useful, unique and interesting content on your website. You may have gone through back linking and other marketing strategies, yet your website or its content does not provide genuine information. Then, what you’re doing would be useless. You may get good traffic after marketing your site, but that would only end there. When your the site you are promoting is something worth sharing, then you would not only get good traffic, it would also entice advertisers or sponsors to post ads on your site.
The old fashion method... advertise..... Classified ads, banners, ads in newsletters, etc... It has worked for years.... But you have to offer something they want....
Classified defo works here in the UK I use Gumtree although we have craigslist also but its not as effective as the former always get great response fromit and usually with a free ad too.
One of those effective ways is to use popular forums (just like this - DigitalPoint). Popular forums do have buy and sell threads on it. You can share your website on those forum threads and tell them that you're looking for advertisers and sponsors. Just be sure you provide all the statistics they will need such as: monthly visitors, unique pageview/visits per day, alexa rankings, page rank, and so on...
I prefer this way... 1. Write best articles as the content of your site which are really helpful and interested to the viewers. 2. Backlink/Linkbuild in all forms to each page of your website. 3. Attend in the open conversations to your content related discussion specially in forums with advertisement. 4. Bookmark you site to most bookmarking sites. 5. Submit your pages to the Web Directories. 6. Collect lots of emails and do marketing there. 7. Raise weekly or monthly polls or any other interesting idea in your website to keep your visitors in your site. 8. And so on.
I would said once you got the traffic they want , you can request lot of thing you want for your website and even extra income because you got something they need and they will hard to refuse if the price or sponsor is reasonable. So work hard on generate quality traffic.

The only best way to get more sponsors is having more blog visitor or website visitors. If you can't produce high quality content for your blog, you can build incentived website that drive people from all over the world careless they have money or not. Advertisers available in 2 types and one of them care more about numbers of visits rather than sales
You have to grow to a decent amount of visitors on your site before you can offer advertising space. What you can do is offer the space for a free period, implement a strategy to drive massive traffic, have your advertiser get clicks because of it. After the trial period, if your advertiser was happy with the results, they'll go from unpaid to paid..
