Does posting comment on a blog with a link to a site count as a backlink?

I mean leaving sensible comments (no spamming) with a link to your site on a relevant blog. Will it have positve effect on search rankings?

Yes it will have a good effect. Some blogs have a nofollow rule but it will do no harm.
Over all its a good stratgy to opt for.

Is the NOFOLLOW by default or some bloggers choose to have it?

I think some people choose to have it, not default.

Run, run, run save your blogs, comments coming in... ;)
    Just kidding. :)

No, I won't be doing that. I will only post to a few very selectively rather than follow a course of crash, bang, wallop.

I guess it does count as a Backlink but it should not be a spam comment as the owner will delete it :) ;)

    By default..
I don't think SE's will count it as a backlink since your link has a nofollow attribute.

I don't see why it wouldn't be counted as a backlink, but as mentioned before, try and refrain my letting the comment appear as spam, as many blog owners are quick to negatively react in these sorts of situations. Try and construct and nice, long and meaningful comment.

What would be the point if they are just using a NOFOLLOW?

If it's a popular blog, you will get visitors - even if they do use no-follow. I think many don't do the rel=no follow thing - to reward people who post good comments.

Well if the blog is having a no follow then the only thing you can expect is a few visitors to your site from your link in the comment < if the blog has some good traffic > and I guess there wont be many visitors , so chk if its having a no-follow or not and then make a good post < so thats its approved in the blog >
Rather than going for a few visitors i will say go for blogs with traffic and which are not using no-follow :) ;)

Sure, but personally I don't really check whether a blog has no-follow on comment-links. I comment when I have something to say.

Exactly. If you really think about it, blogs are not meant to be link directories. On that note, people that make comments on blogs should be doing so only when they have something to say, rather than to simply get a link back to their site.

If you are checking to see if a blog has a nofollow link, you are automatically in the category of someone only looking to get a link back to your site, in which case, the blog should be a nofollow.

What you describe is the definition of blog spam and why most CMS (blog) systems have no follow set as the default for URLs in comments.

If you have something to say, say it. Don't worry about if doing so will help your site. If building your PR is the goal when you leave comments, No follow was built just for you.

normal links would be counted as back links, also i have noticed in few blogs its instant, you post and your comments appear immediately thats what i love the most, fast back link :)

    no follow >> no

Yes, blogs are being crawled fast compared to regular websites. A link from a similar niche blog will give you a boost on rankings in SERP.
