What is the best way to name an image file for SEO? It seems one way to get in the back door of a search engine would be to SEO your websites' images.
Will using key words help? Should I separate the keywords by underscores? Any other characters that are bad or good?

    Use appropriate keywords.

    i.e: keyword1-keyword2.jpg

Also use the image alt tag.
This would however not make a difference to your position on the SERP :)

    use anything but remember
    - name should be short and related to pic
    - always add alt tag to it [for seo purpose]
e.g let says you want to put an image of home on a home mortgage site http://www.abcofmortgage.com then try for name home-mortgage.jpg and add alt="Home mortgage Services" or other related keywords of the requirement

    Good article.

Also, naming your image can generate traffic from google image search.
