I think the best way here is by press releases, if it is well written. The best LONG TERM way is probably word of mouth or viral marketing.

Sending email to VIPs doesn't usually work well.. ;)

I think press release works if your site is really newsworthy and the ways to promote depends on your type of site.Different sites work different ways.

relevant forums/blog comments is good to start with.. so is stumbleupon - for new sites that is. Maybe some PPC advertising as well.

Is the website of your existing business? or is the website a new business itself?

The techniques change depending on the answer. They'd also change depending on the topic and industry. Can we have more information so as to give you a more complete answer?

Well, I'd say press releases, but that's because I'm a PR professional. A blogger might tell you blogging. A direct marketer might say email campaigns. Content writers might go with article submissions. SEO people might go with link building. It depends as much on who you talk to as it does the specific site you're curious about.

I think all of them are important. But remember all of this can be beaten by interesting and unique content alone. But Blogging and directory submission will be the first thing I will do to get index by Search Engine.

Oh btw ,you've forgot to mention advertising on social networking websites.

There are thousands of promotional tactics out there, so there's no way they could have listed all of them. ;)

Content won't ever be the best option "alone" no matter how unique and interesting it is. It's definitely important, and can make for a reasonably successful site... but only if you know how to market it to get people to see it in the first place. And even if it takes off w/o any marketing whatsoever, you could have always done better by putting some marketing effort in.

As many members suggested here, there are a lot of ways to promote a Web site and some of the best methods have been indicated here. IMO database marketing is one of the most important because it often costs 2x, 3x or more to generate *new* first time visitors than it does to generate *return* visitors. Unique and useful content is naturally the first element of getting repeat visitors. Followed by permission-based email marketing. Together they're two powerful concepts to promote a Web site in addition to the several excellent suggestions in this thread.

Given that we don't know the industry the OP is in then the identity of the VIPs will differ.

If it's the motor industry then an endorsement from a professional driver would be outstanding...

but useless if you are in the cosmetics industry

and less relevant if you are in IT

so the VIP to one person will be Mr Blah to another.

All 10 points are important as each other!

Although no web site can suceed without good quality back links. No matter how good the content is!

All 10 points are important as each other!

Although no web site can suceed without good quality back links so I'll add number 11 - Buying links - Or we can call it link sponsorship deals :).

I'm not sure what the OP meant by VIP but I'm guessing direct makreting to other people in the same industry??
