Sure it does...if the press release is picked up by bloggers and journalists. But in order for it to be picked up, you will have to have something that is really newsworthy. Otherwise, you will just end up with a link from the PR distribution website you signed up with (btw...most will only provide live links if you pay).

And you'll need to also pay extra for more visibility so that you're more likely to get picked up also.

Yup, great way to get quality links. Use PR Web direct and have something worth distributing.

PRWeb recently became a paid service. PRLeap is still free.

I would suggest article marketing instead, then your article is "usable" forever, and not time-sensitive. Unless you really think your news item is truly newsworthy.

If your press release wasn't valuable either you didn't have anything truly newsworthy to say, it was poorly written, or it was poorly distributed. Press releases are highly effective publicity tools when used correctly.

Their best "use" is to use them how they're intended... to gain publicity (media attention) and help to bring awareness, name recognition, etc. Backlinks are traffic are side benefits, but if they're your primary concern, your press release will only bring you a fraction of the success it otherwise could.

The more media attention you can bring through a release, the more backlinks you'll end up in the long run anyway. Don't waste your time simply thinking about backlinks from distribution sites... think about getting mentions on authority sites in your niche because of it; much more valuable in the long run, and you can get an unlimited number (rather than just the few you flat out pay for on distribution sites).

Press releases also aren't designed to bring direct traffic. However, if you build publicity well enough through release campaigns, traffic should naturally increase (albeit from direct visits and links on sites covering the story, rather than predominantly from the press release itself). Remember that a press release is supposed to be written "for the media" and not for your site's end users. They'll come across it through the resulting coverage.

While you can get some good pickups through sites like PRnewswire, PRweb, etc., you shouldn't neglect the real newswires such as Associated Press (AP.org). You also should consider a manual distribution campaign with complete followups when possible. Make contacts with journalists and editors in your niche, request their editorial calendars, and directly pitch your stories (or hire someone to do it for you). It's not cheap if you outsource that to a PR professional, but utilizing their contacts and relationships if you don't have the time to build your own can be well worth it.

In the end, the most important thing is still making sure you have something newsworthy to say (and not just "hey, I launched a new website!"). Tell people why they should care, what makes your site different than competitors, why there's a market demand for another site in the niche, etc. A quality angle and real news can go a long way.

It depends on the press release website you're submitting. But most of the press release website I know, they do post live link and permanent URL for your Press Release.
