Is ranking easier with blogs or web pages?

I am starting a new project and was wondering if I should create the site using Wordpress or just create it with plain old html/css web pages.

    Blogs:
Pros - Easier to maintain, all database driven, links automatically created for new pages, etc.

    Web pages:
Pros - Can customize page titles, meta descriptions and keywords.

Anyone have any thoughts on this subject? I just want to make sure I do all of my homework on this before I start.

    Thanks for your feedback.

blogs are better for people that don't really know what they're doing, in my experience. they handle basic optimization for you-- something that people that are completely blind to the concept of SEO would miss out on on their from scratch pages.

that being said, blogs are still convienent, and if you really know what you're doing you can still tweak a blog to do exactly what you want, it's just a bit harder.

a lot of it is just personal preference.

I recently read an article stating that search engines favour blogs. Unfortunately I cannot remember exactly why but I believe it had to do with constantly being updated with niche content.

I don't think the search engines can even tell the difference between a blog from traditional site, unless you are using the search engine's blog service. (E.G. Google and blogger)

Yes, you're right about pros. of html page but you can customize blog to meet your requirement in seo terms easily, meta tags is not has much important as it used to be. you can use many plug-ins to make blog have different meta tags for each page and different title for each page also.

Why not mix it up? Websites nowadays just add blogs on their websites. Integration of Blogs to a web pages is the best way you can do. ;)

    Great thought Bondat :p

I think combining the two will be the best of both worlds. I will be doing some reviews with screen shots and images which would probably work best on the standard HTML pages. Then my updates would be done through the blog.

Cool!!! Thanks for all the input everyone.

It is the content that counts not the format. Whether using a CMS, blog or static HTML, the content counts.

I guess, you can create whatever you wish and are more comfortable with. Content is the KING - if you update and have unique content your site will have more SERP and return visitor traffic.... if you don't add new content... you will be lost with other 100,000,000 crap sites in 1000+ results.

    I personally like to mix'em.
Use a website to describe your products and build a blog in a public domain (such as blogger.com) to generate fresh content constantly.
The reason for using a public domain is that they tend to get indexed faster.

As noted above, use the blog to sell the content. An excellent combination.

Generally Blogs are mostly topic specific so they rank well.

I had been advised by an SEO pro thats Blogs are read well by Search Engines... I immediately made about 200 Blogs all using links to different pages of my site...

but did not make any difference what so ever...

DON't KNow for sure, but i think blogs don't make much changes to ranks ...

If you use Wordpress you have onsite seo already done, so you don't have to do much, just offsite seo. And optimise a bit more wordpress onsite seo with some guides there are on the internet, look up in google "seo for wordpress" for more info :)

i prefer a good old wordpress site over a cms/forum, however i enjoy making sites from scratch (the manual way).

both can accomplish the same thing, but all depends if you have the patience to code all the pages from scratch or not.
