Domain Name SEO question?

I want to know if creating a new domain name similiar to a domain that gets a ton of traffic will help bring any traffic from their domain to my new one...

For example, say there is a site called: whatever.com and I make some forums for it called whateverforum.com and use the same keywords as their site. Will I bring in extra traffic just because alot of people are searching for whatever.com?

I'm sure I would if my site was listed above their site, but I am thinking my site would be listed right under it in keyword searches in google or bing, and im sure people would find it by trying to find theirs or involuntarily run into my site on accident instead of theirs?

It may help BUT you would need to make sure your site had some great content so you could compete for a position in search engine rankings. Also you would want to make sure and not just copy (or write very similar) content from the other site.

I would recommend grabbing a domain name related to the topic of your website and just making sure you get the on and off page SEO right. Don't base your plans on piggybacking off another popular sites traffic.

    Just my opinion.

Yes, but just be careful about the legal consequences. If it appears that you are impersonating their brand or company in any way then they could sue you.

Yes, Jack I agree, I am not stupid enough to try to RIP content off another site or anything like that or steal anything from it at all. As for Keywords, its not illegal to use the same keywords as another site, as for my content I would just be writing it up myself I guess.

From what I know, you can create any domain you wish as long as its not taken already. I am not trying to hijack someone elses site at all, I am just curious to know if making a fresh domain name for site that I know gets good traffic can help me in search engines just from other people looking for that site and running across mine in the process...

No, I wouldnt be impersonating anything, you guys are underestimating my thoughts about this whole thing. I am just talking about domain names and keyword searches at this point. Content on the site would be original, images and graphics I would create in photoshop, etc.

I suppose that technically if you can register a similar domain and make sure your content is as good as theirs then you theory may work. It all depends on if the people looking for the other site know that your site is not what they are looking for....

Best of luck with your project anyhow.

What type of site are you thinking of making?

OK, but if the domain name contains a trademark or brand name then you could still get sued.

It all depends upon the content of your site.
