I want to know is it worth writing meta keywords for ranking. Does anyone here who has performed any research on this?
Yes you should if you want to rank for a specific keywords, Even in web directories you will find them,i personally prefer it and have left option in my directories for them if someone want to place them. mostly i find it that webmasters while submitting sites always provide them and fill the meta keyword box ...
Common conscience is Goolge does not pay attention to them anymore but many people still fill them in because some day google might another SE might be come popular and they might.
No there is no need to write your meta keywords. Google doesn't rank your page based on your meta keywords. In the past this was abused, but nowadays search engines use various data to rank your page.
google don't prefer meta keywords tag but there is no drawback also. so you can enter meta keywords tag.
Google supposedly ignores them. Yahoo! and others supposedly use them to some extent. If you don't overstuff them and keep them on topic, it would seem they are worth a few moments of your time but I wouldn't overly stress about them.
Do not overstuff them as mentioned. Keep them minimal and relevant to page topic. page title is important also. i have seen them in results
Apparently, Yahoo gave up on it a few years back. Bing doesn't use it and Google apparently never had. So, in terms of the big 3, none of them use the tag at all. For metasearch engines like DuckDuckGo who compile/aggregate the results from multiple search engines and sources, they probably discount them by association (e.g. since none of the search engines they grab results from use them, neither will those engines themselves). Anyone still using the meta keywords tag probably is just doing it out of habit from designing all these years.
What I've heard lately is no, they are no longer necessary to spend a whole lot of time with meta tags..... hope this helps!
Well google skips meta keywords, but experts suggestion is you use meta keywords, this at least describes that what services/products you'r offering..
I've found with several things that could be used to influence how a site ranks or is assigned PR do still work, to a degree. With several hundred things factoring into how a site/page ranks it would be just about impossible for a site owner to know what things are being downplayed or even lied about. Dan, one of the posts you linked to (Barry Swartz, really?), has a comment which links to another post that refutes what was said by Yahoo. It's here - http://searchengineland.com/sorry-yahoo-you-do-index-the-meta-keywords-tag-27743
+1 to don't overstuff them Google doesn't use, but if you value rankings in Yandex and Baidu then use them. People forget that in some countries, Google isn't the top search engine.
Hi, Writing meta keywords are very old, now-a-days even meta description also not useful, only title is needful and use your keywords perfectly in title is important. Thanks
Google doesn't use meta tags for ranking purposes but still reads and use meta tags to describing a website. Whenever a webmaster use meta description and meta keywords, whatever is put in there will be what Google will display in the listing. Otherwise, without meta tags, Google displays as description for a given site whatever content comes first after or before the body tag.
I've never seen Google use the meta keywords tag for anything. Evidence? They can use the meta description for the description snippet in the SERPs, but they only do this when it is a well written description. Most people spam, make it too short, or leave it out and so Google just grabs page content (or ODP descriptions if you are listed in DMOZ). Yes Barry! To clarify --- I don't have anything against Barry. I just disagree with his wild, unresearched theories regarding directories. He isn't an expert in directories, he doesn't know how to differentiate between a good one and a bad one. He represents the vast majority of SEOs who conduct directory submissions poorly, by using an en masse hit and miss method, rather than tailoring and varying to suit each individual or style of directory. If you lump everything together and generalise, you almost always make mistakes --- that's what I disagree with him on. He over-generalises. It's wrong. I stand corrected on the article. When Danny Sullivan refutes something, you have to listen. So what is being said by Yahoo is that the meta keyword tag is giving the smallest ranking signal in their algorithm. Whether it still works is anyone's guess now. Meta description is actually very useful. If well written it becomes the description snippet in Google's SERPs. Why is that important? It allows you to directly communicate with your audience, providing a call-to-action that entices them to click your link. So, don't say it isn't useful, it is absolutely useful --- who cares if it's used for rank or not, you get to talk to humans with it
