So we all know what the penguin update is all about. No keyword stuffing, no duplicate content, and no link spamming.

The question that I have for all of you is what are the most effective link building strategies after the penguin update? Is blog commenting effective? What sort of backlink building do you engage in to acquire higher rankings?

To answer your question, it is the same as it always was. The basics have never changed. Links from quality sites that are related to your site. Yes blogs, forums, article directories, and any other sites of relevance. The problem was people were finding ways to outsmart the bots with hidden links and irrelevant links, etc.

I would agree - quality is the watch word; if you are placing an article in a directory that provides fresh, unique content, the link is of value. But the most penguin proof strategy I can think of is guest blogging. I would look for a good blog to place my content before any article directory, for example.

Naturalness. Randomness. Quality, not quantity. Patterns that look UNnatural (non-random) are suspicious.

#1 Owning your own private high pr blog network was really powerful and is still powerful in SEO. Most anchor text i use are the main keyword and many secondary keywords. I highly think that these links are the one pushing my sites to page1.

#2 Guest posting. This is a method that I continuously use on my site. So I got more links from guest posts. Most anchor text I use are brand/domain name or URL but I try to place keywords on article title.

#3 Web 2.0 properties such as blogger, squiddo, wordpress etc. I only submit unique articles, and try to rank those Web 2.0s for related keywords with low competition using high pr comments, web2.0 w/spun articles, bookmarks, etc.. It's like making a link pyramid or Tiered link building, but with the intention to rank them and get few more visitor to money site. Also great in increasing Pagerank when google updates it.

#4 Press Release. I just use it to diversify anchor texts and links. I also have the intention for other blogs to pick up the press release and write something about my site but it still isn't happening but I feel like I'm getting their.

#5 Video Submission. Great to have extra visitors to your site and also for diversifying links.

#6 Forum Posting. Be an expert or one of the members that offers value in the forum. Once you achieved that, they mostly click on your signature and they are targeted traffic.

    Some Thoughts:
Article directories aren't as much effective as it was before. You could see more and more web2.0 properties that are ranking in first page of google search [even for keywords with high competition]. I don't see much article directories ranking these days and most directories are spam to death anyways. Web Directories, I only submit if they have manual review before accepting a site. Blog comments, I hate spammers leaving irrelevant comments on my site. So I feel like I don't like any blog comment link going to my money site so I use them to powerup my web2.0s.

    Well said jethro!

I love all the link building strategies you do. I'm also on it.

Additional about Guest Posting - Guest post is very time consuming but its worth waiting once your article has been publish of course with your link. You must know where to find good related website that is accepting guest post or else try email some websites/blogs and inquire if they do like contributing your original article that might help their website to update their content (I have tried emailing website owner and even they don't have a GUEST POST section on their website, fortunately some of them accept it.)

Make it sure your article is original also don't over do doing anchor link with your targeted keyword. You can combine different keywords or much better the domain itself. ;) That's I think the effective way to gain quality links.

    I hope this helps ;)

You need to diversify your anchor text and make sure most if not all of your links comes from other sites that are relevant to your niche.

The most effective method is relationship building. Another good one is guest blogging, where you put high quality content relevant to other people's sites with your link in it or in the author byline.

Penguin update is about link spamming. Keyword stuffing and duplicate content are associated to Panda update. Matt Cuts have answered on your question. :) This is just for you! Why should not follow standard one?

Very important. More and more important to SEO. I tend to forget to mention that, though I am a Twitnut. What I haven't done is focus on Google+. I have an account, but I rarely post there, and I need to push my clients in that direction, too. It matters because Google says it does. Google says a lot of things that must be taken with a grain of salt, but I rather tend to believe Google is giving a little extra ranking weight to its own social platform.

I like all of what you said, which is why I just repeated it. ;)

    On forum posting
; while it is only one of the reasons I post in forums I will tell you right now it is very effective. I am a mod on a couple of other forums and have wracked up more than a few links over the years. The effect on where my sites rank is clear, no doubt about it. It also clearly drives traffic, and has brought me clients. Is it worth the time I spend income wise? Hard to tell, but I like to interact and the sense of being useful occasionally is reward enough. Or maybe it's being a smart ass. One of the two. :D

If you have something to say and can say it well, forums can be a terrific source of traffic and links.

Glad to hear you're doing well kababayan ;). Yeah, it's very time consuming but it will payoff and it did payoff. Check your guestposts and I'm sure most of them increased in this google pagerank toolbar update yesterday. All the best....

Thanks for your feedback everyone. I think I need to focus on guest blogging and social bookmarking. It seems as if these are two successful ways of acquiring higher rankings.

What are everyone's thoughts on blog commenting. I comment on relevant sites and use diverse anchor links. Good/bad?

Again, I appreciate your feedback. It's greatly appreciated.

Having a mix of follow and nofollow is natural. Having too many inbound links with same anchor text is not natural.

Be careful. Avoid any patterns that are not random and natural.
