You don't need to learn Photoshop to design websites! Photoshop is just popular and professional graphical software. Despite Photoshop you can use other graphical application like Fireworks or others.
In order to build your website you must learn HTML, CSS and Javascript, and maybe also PHP or other server site program. Of course, you need to know also some graphical editors like Photoshop to prepare your image files for your website.
As HTML editor I use Dreamweaver but I consider to use simpler html editors, especially those they have good html or css validator. I don't recommend any graphic interface editors. keep far away from them. They make more problems than give you benefit. HTML is really simple, you can just use normal text editor like notepad but better is that with code validator.

How flexible templates has the WordPress for creating the websites? Can I build any website I want there? I know nothing about WordPress. I have tried to find out about it I found it not too flexible for me.

Of course, you are right, but you can not buy creative abilities in the shop, you have them or not. Even if you are so creative you can also try to do what you are able to do. So be persistent as well.

Honestly, DO. Just go out and start designing. Sign up as a freelance. Use a couple books for the basics(Try Head First HTML & CSS as well as Don't Make Me Think!) then use W3Schools.com as a reference. You're on your way :)

sounds discouraging. not everyone is creative in the same way. that is why i lean more towards coding than graphic design.

Unfortunately, it is true. That's why not everyone can be good website designer. Of course, you will build website if you learn all about designing but your website will never be so brilliant like those who have graphic talent. You are not able to learn or buy this skill like talent. You are born with this only.

ok richard. do you have to reply to every little thing said in the forum? its kind of annoying. especially when you are not saying anything interesting or particularly useful. i will agree that there is a certain amount of artistic talent innate to some people while others have to work at it. but that does not mean it cannot be learned. why do you think people go to school for anything artistic? to be inspired. if they were born knowing everything about art then there would be no reason to go. that's just one example. you're making quite the assumption for someone who claims to be new to web design.
