Competition vs Global Monthly Searches

I'm somewhat confused. I'm sure the questions will give you an idea of my level of SEO knowledge, and I know newbees aren't given much notice, but I'm hoping someone will answer the question anyway.

I'm using Google Keyword Analyzer. The keyword phrase entered into that tool give me a result of:
    Competition: High
    Global Monthly Searches: 48

How can the Competition be high with only 48 Global Monthly Searches?

    Thanks

Global Monthly Searches - how many times people search for this keyword phrase in google, not many
Competition - how many advertisers are bidding on this keyword, i.e. trying to get their ads shown when somebody searched for that keyword phrase, a lot

so basically if you build a site around that keyword, expect not much traffic during it is rarely searched for, but there will always be plenty of Adsense ads to show for that keyword

The number of searches is irrelevant. If it's a good converting keyword you can be sure advertisers want to rank for it.

if you are hoping for some natural search traffic, number of searches is far from irrelevant

That has nothing to do with what the OP asked.

Number of searches is relevant if you are:
    a) publisher and building website around a keyword
    b) advertiser and hoping to get some impressions for your ad

sorry, I am having hard time seeing in what situation number of searches would be irrelevant

OMG dude get over it. I was simply answering his question, what you're talking about has nothing to do with this thread.

Ok... I appreciate the responses, but I'm more confused than ever.

I'll try to rephrase the question:

How can a keyword, or keyword phase have a "High" Competition when the Global Monthly Searches is only 48? It seems to me if the Global Monthly Searches are 48, the Competition would be "Low."

why would you assume that? there is no correlation between search volume and competition. some keywords may have a high search volume but convert really poorly so there won't be much competition.

if there are 1000 merchants willing to sell "Gadget A" and only 48 people that want and search for "Gadget A" - here we go you get high competition amongst merchants willing to sell "Gadget A", while the search volume for it is low.
