Need advice on hiring a developer or company

Hi I haven't participated much around here I know but I thought I'd seek help anyway.

We have a site that is in dire need of redesign nearly from the ground up. It is more or less an e-commerce site but one I feel needs to be a custom job and not use an off the shelf ecommerce or even CMS package. It basically is an event tickets site which sells concert, sports and theater tickets. There is also another project slightly related that is more of a traditional website though it will need to be database driven. Both projects will require LAMP + more...

Before we proceed to fix things we'd like to consult with someone about what to do and how to do it. Are there any recommendations of any individuals or companies that can help us and do it right?

I imagine I will get a ton of spam form people offering their services. That's nice but I am hoping I can get some feedback from as many people as possibly about getting help. Last thing any one wants to do is get bad advice or direction and then spend thousands to implement it.

I have done most of the work previously but would like someone else to step in and do the work and do it better than I can.

    Any help is appreciated.

Yep, you were right. No help, just solicitations.

Allow me to give you just one small bit of advice - never hire anyone who solicits you.

You might want to find some sites that look like what you want and have the a link to the developer's site. Then contact those developers and talk to them.

I suggest to hire an outsourcing company instead of a freelancer, because leased staff are permanent workers of a company and are easy to reach in case you need them. Freelancers do not have employers so they do as they please and sometimes cannot be contacted for various reasons.

"Outsourcing companies" are very frequently individuals posing as companies - which means that they're dishonest from the start.

    Post in the buy/sell/trade section.

Shame on Sunitha for the solicitation.

    Excellent advice.

You will never get good service for small money.
    Control your contracter everyday.
    Also, don't pay upfront.

Don't pay all up front more like. I can't imagine any developer starting a commission with no collateral.

That's why people invented itraders and other rating systems. But even honest man can disappear.
Weekly payments and daily reports. That will save client a lot of money and time.

I'd advise against eLancer. It has become a mess of cheap low quality "developers". Unless you have a large budget you'll likely be ripped off.

MOST of these "hire a developer" sites have become homes of cheap low quality "developers". An experienced (10 years or more) developer doesn't accept a job for $7/hour, or $150 for what's going to be many hours of discussion before he can even start working. Hire someone from one of those sites and, unless you aren't expecting much, you'll be disappointed. LinkedIn may be a better site, but you have to know enough to do the work yourself if you're going there. It's not a hiring site.
