I do a range of things to bring traffic into my site but I do follow a 25% rule. 25% of my traffic comes from SEO 25% of my traffic comes from my subscribers 25% of my traffic comes from social media 25% of my traffic comes from everything else (forum commenting/affiliates promoting my products/word of mouth etc) That way if you do have a problem with part of your traffic you will always have at any ONE time 75% of your traffic. And I have always done this and then when there is yet another Google update I don't particularly care that much about it. However I have never been one for black hat techniques or duplicate content so I have never had a bad experience under Google.
