If you're using PHP and MySQL, then SMF (available at simplemachines.org) is the best way to go, by far.

For email scripts, try searching krugle.com (under projects) and hotscripts.com

Sorry, I would have given you working links, but the system is set up to prevent "new" people from posting live links unless they have a good reputation, at least ten posts and have been here at least a week.

Kinda makes it hard for people who actually try to help others around here. Which reminds me, I need to send a request to enable "disable links in posts" in the reply "page" - that would help out a lot.

That's very debatable, phpBB is great, and so is wBBLite, SMF isn't the best by far or near for that matter :p

Only after you have run all those forum scripts for longer than 6 months, otherwise you have no objective standpoint and no first hand experience either.

PHPBB isn't very secure. I'd go with MyBB or SMF.

IPB or VB would be the best choice, but they aren't free.

There are also a few smaller-scale ones, if your whole site isn't just a forum.

is that in reference to me? cause if it is, i have and i do.
phpbb forum software is the worst unsecure peice of garbage out there. SMF wins hands down every time. vBulletin is excellent forum software for the money.

i thought we were going to debate. thats not debating, thats making an unqualified statement.

PHPBB is reportedly one of the best scripts, although I've not had the chance to verify this for myself. I do know they are massive and when you have such a huge userbase, there are people reporting bugs left right and center and developers galore to improve things so you can't go wrong there I don't think. Give PHPBB a whirl.

You may be interested in having a look at opensourcecms.com they have many forum scripts with active demo's to test.
