I have a link bait that is in the process of 'going viral'

Well, I don't want to reveal the identity of my blog on here for a few reasons (though some may be able to work it out from my post, who knows), but I wanted to share my current link bait experience that is happening right now, and ask for some advice about propagating it further.

The link bait was this: I went to an event that was attracting a lot of publicity, took lots of videos and pictures (some really good stuff), rushed back home and posted THE FIRST report of the event (as far as I know) on the internet.

I then submitted to digg, delicious, furl, reddit etc, put some choice technorati tags on, uploaded the videos to youtube, and emailed/blog commented a few people I though might be interested in the whole thing.

Now, I have a very new blog, and at the moment get an average of about 70 unique visitors a day.

Yesterday I got 1,200 visitors, and today it is looking like it will be more. (I know this isnt a lot for some people, but it is for me!)

However, none of the viral stuff happened where I expected it - through digg or reddit. It got no attention there.

Instead, I got on a few different websites that drove a lot of referrals, god knows how...mostly strange foreign ones I don't understand...jaggle.nl (the top performer!), ize.hu and nrk.no for example (anyone know any of these?). I think it might have all stemmed from being featured on www.uniquedaily.com.

All of this has driven a lot of nice links, including one from a Wired blog, which is very nice :) I hope it gets a lot more links too!

    I have two questions though...

    1. It did quite well on youtube, with my 5 videos getting over 5000 views in total, and some 'honors', but my website got little benefit. A few people have gone to my profile and clicked through to my site, but not many. Is there a way I could have exploited the youtube traffic better to my site's benefit?

    2. It is still going viral, spreading to more sites. Is there any way I can help to propagate this to maximise the benefit?

Thanks! I am beaming from ear to ear right now! I hope this link bait pulls my site out of the sandbox! :)

Did your youtube have your site's URL stamped somewhere on it? Ive heard, and found that doing that can help get more exposure to a site...

Unfortunately not...I am not a very technical person and have no idea about editing videos :(

Can anyone advise me how to do that?

The only way to get to my site was through my youtube profile, so a lot of exposure wasted in that area!

But the links to the blog post are still coming strong! :)

A friend of mine had a pretty nifty advertisement made for his website which incorporated his website URL throughout the video and this brought in a lot of traffic to his website. This is a great way to do things.

Try looking on google for "Add Watermark MPEG AVI" or some other terms and you might find some software to do this with existing videos.

you need to have your url someplace in the video. most people do not read the non-video text.

thanks for the youtube tips guys, will bear it in mind for the next time (although i think editing the video would have slowed me down too far and the link bait blog post would not have worked then, because IT HAD TO BE THE 1st report on the web).

Any ideas for my second question, while my post is still going viral, are there any other ways I can help it along to maximise my benefit?
