    Ranking factors:
    1. You should find an increase in the number of visitors
    2. You should find your site among the 1st 5 google pages
    3. The increase should be people from your target market

These are some key factors that determine whether your SEO is working or not.
Your Alexa ranking also should go up.

    All the best

Are you using some type of analytics? Google analytics is good if you aren't using any.

From the dashboard in Google Analytics there are so many things you can look at. Visitors over time, number of visitors per keyword, bounce rate, time on site, and many more. All of these would be good indicators of what's going on with your site.

But if you want to track ROI in dollars, you need to track how much money you are making now compared to how much money you were making before doing your SEO.

That is the easiest and clearest way in my opinion.

If you really want to check your ROI you want to spend some time setting up Goals within Google Analytics. For example if you have an ecommerce store you can set up a goal where a user would add an item to the cart, view the cart page, start the checkout process, enter address, billing, etc. Submit payment, hit the thank you page.

Using this as a goal you can also see what your abandonment rate is, e.g. 10% complete the full path, 20% stop when they hit the cart page, 25%, stop when they have to submit payment, etc.
