I really need help deciding which of these will fit my project the best. I know some programming, a bit of pascal/c, and I know some SQL, and some HTML. What I need done: A web store, products added in categories, with a picture. Clients can add products, but there is no need for traditional checkout. They need to have only one option at "checkout", a button that sends to an email they fill in their order. The sent order is without pictures of products. That's about all that needs to be done really. This has to happen this way because these "clients" are people in another country, they make their orders, give to one person, who emails them to us, we make the orders, and then on a given date that person comes and picks all the orders up. I can more or less guess how to make the database, had a course on SQL some years back, but how about the front end? like, the actual mmm "face" of it all? So, I can't decide what I should study to allow me to do it. Please advise. Alon.
You can use php , many sites using php for such purposes on net, it's better to hire a worker or ask for help from webmasters
Ruby is great. if you are starting from scratch and don't know either then try rails, if you know a little php, use that. its all personal preference.
If you know the fundamentals of programming then you shouldn't have a hard time learning anything. I would suggest PHP simply because it's 1) easy 2) popular 3) well supported and 4) forgiving (which can also be a bad thing).
Hobby or commercial? If hobby, your choice, since the only consideration is what you want to do. If commercial, we'd need a lot more information. What's on the server, for starters? Writing PHP code for a server that doesn't have PHP installed is just short of insane.

I have most of my sites in PHP, but since learning Ruby on Rails for my current job, I want to convert everything to RoR. It's much easier to spin up a site and expand quickly.
Jestuh, what help do you want? Just take a copy of a PHP file, comment one function at a time and rewrite it in Ruby. Then clean up the result.
You can do it in whichever language you are more comfortable to work. But in php you will find more help, if needed, and more code already written. Also you will have an easiest time hosting the app.
