I agree, if your only option (do to lack of funds) is free hosting get your site on to a reliable paid hosting plan as soon as you can afford one.
If you want free, and fully customizable, check out Blogger.com. It's owned by Google....very good option for being completely free. If you want your own domain it's 10 dollars a year, which is really cheap. Good luck!
I think you should get a free domain [.]tk and getfree hosting from host1free or 000webhost. If you can afford a domain name, then buy one which may cost you arround $11 or buy a .in domain which will cost you less than $2
Use Blogspot and Buy TLD Domain. But I recommend you to use Self Hosting and Install Wordpress.org on it! Because wordpress has a lot of plugin that will help you in SEO
If you have money for hosting, yes, hostgator is a good choice, and i think this is what dean f meant by self hosting, was to purchase quality hosting and host your own wordpress blog. It is easy to do. If your on a tight budget and or you want to try to gain some knowledge before buying hosting + domain name, then its good to join up with a free cpanel hosting provider, (even if its just to muck around) as you can learn how to install wordpress with 1 click. Its easy to do, and if you get stuck doing the install (you wont) but just come back here and ask again. Ive seen alot of people waste alot of money on hosting domain names and give up on their site, id rather you go for free, learn the ropes, be sure that you can do what you want to do before you spend alot of cash. If you setup your site on a free host, and you like the results and your friends agree its a worthwhile investment then its east to signup and go for paid hosting, and let your host transfer your site for you
