"A link is a link"

Guys you must keep this in mind, of course there are some links that are extremely spammy and sometimes people can simply build spammy links to your site without you knowing. But this is out of your control. Simply focus on building quality links to your site and make sure you have more of those than the spammy ones.

It is really that simple. If your overall link porfolio is made up of just forum links then you simply won't rank, focus on quality links. Now if you are wondering what quality links are, well they are high pr relevant sites/blogs.

    Is it really that? YES!

When building quality links to your site you will see improvements in rankings, building spammy links will not help you and if for some weird reason they do improve your rankings, congrats but hold on tight because the next google update.... monkey? cow? dog? (had to do it LOL) will get you!!

Penguin basically target the quality of content and backlinks. Now google is more specific to category and unique and informative content.

Yes, remove all links that are not relevant to your niche. Try to attract links from sites related to TV and entertainment.

Then protect yourself and fight for it! Serve them with DMCA, report them as spammers. The majority of hosting companies now comply with the rules and it is quite easy to get the duplicate content removed.

I'm agree with Alien. Actually there is nothing like over promotion due to forum posting. But yes you should check your onpage and inbound link.

Check if you have any bad link or link from penalized site. check your root domain link ratio into your no. of total links. i would suggest you to check you site opensiteexplorer(dot)org or ahref(dot)com.

    Hope it will help you

It actually depends on how many of your backlinks are from forums. If there are too many, it's not good.

I have two websites, one has a good amount of "forum backlinks", and the other -- none. One is pure commercial, and the other is just for my fun. Both have original content (written by me, not sure about its quality, but it's not spinned dupes, anyway). And the both are hit.
I just checked google serp for a query that was very good for my commercial site. Later #1 was an _extremely reputable_ online shop. Now #1 is a (scammy) facebook page...
I can't find any logic behind the latest google update. Call it "Ass" or "Mule", not "Penguin"...

    hi..

i have been on reserching lately and my advice to you is to get rid of forum profiles and wordpress comments.

Google will penalyze for it.. There is another linkbuilding strategy lately that i have fully tested and explain in my latest product.

It is a little change in what kinds of links will work from now....

I don't think that anything might go wrong due to signatures. There might be other reason.

I think a lot of what people have on here is great stuff to read. One thing that I do want to contribute: I think people overestimate Google's ability to determine what's 'relevant'. There are a lot of times where you'll see a site link to another site that appears totally unrelated based on pure semantic analysis. For example, I saw a link to a site on solar energy on a finance site. The author regards everything an investment and thinks anyone taking from the electrical grid is making a financial mistake. relevant? Not if you look at keywords. Relevant if you talk to a human though. There are always going to be complexities that can't be 100% accounted for.

Forum signature links are not a part of unnatural linking and it won't harm your website as most of the forums keep them No follow even Digital point have all the signature links no follow. So they do not harm your website.

Forum links are not spam or over optimized unless you use too much or only the way to get back links.
