Make laptop as your first choice, because its comfortable and easy to take with you at any places and spots. I would also like to suggest you that you can also choose a better tablet for being entertainment yourself and stay connected to internet by just one touch. Tablet is one of the best destination of fun and using internet with advanced level.

If depends upon your work load. If your work isn't too much or you want to do comfortably your work then laptop would be better for you. Laptop is also easy to carry.

why should a laptop be slower than desktop? if you feel so increase the ram to 3gb and add an extra graphics card.

laptops are good for mobility and travel so you can work anywhere at anytime . Desktops won't compare with laptops in functions like games and stuff. So depends of what you use it :p

At the moment I have two desktops, I don't need a laptop at the moment as I don't have the need to have a mobile machine, but in the past I have owned two laptops, a ThinkPad A31 and then a ThinkPad R40. I've owned around 15 desktops in my 14 year life (yes they come and go very quickly!) and I tend to own multiple desktop machines at the same time like I do now. I tend to prefer desktops because I like having the power and a large screen, 24" in my case.
But Laptop a comfortable to carry.

It depends on your current desktop performance. i5 or i7 processors are good, but dont forget to RAM and GPU.

I agree however laptops have come a long way these days, including with gaming, and depending what you're trying to run a lot of newer gaming laptops can handle the load. I'm a console gamer so my personal preference is laptops, due to their mobility as well. I do have a desktop at home but it's rarely being used.
