The latest extremely sick example of Far Right Extremism in on display in Arizona right now. The highly partisan Secretary of State, Ken Bennett has threatened to remove President Obama from the ballot in November. http://communities.washingtontimes....a-election-official-vows-keep-obama-ballot-b/ His move is a response to the crazed fantasy of the angry birther movement, who despite continuous and never ending hard data to the contrary are fueling the flames of craziness by contesting Obama's birth place. The move is nothing less than an attack on the very foundations of our political system and the rights of citizens to have a clear choice in elections. It is little more than an extremist move to subvert the political process. Its one more example of a an extremist right wing move that bin laden would love.
Off the subject > Did you read about Bennett's son? Several years ago, he only got 30 days in jail for sodomizing boys at a camp. Here and here. On subject > I don't think this will amount to much, certainly not taking Obama off the ballot. Just a lot of noise.
Gee Rebecca, Bennet was accused of using his power to limit the penalty on his son. Now he is using his power to possibly alter the results of an election. His excuse and reasons are in reaction to the most lunatic angriest fringe of the GOP. All facts identify that this political move by Bennet is completely wrong and totally unsupportable. His so called reason for doing this are as a result of a nutty lunatic fringe that would create a disaster for American politics. Seems to me this guy should not be in office.
I think he did. If Clifton Bennett didn't have that political connection, my belief is he would have had a significantly harsher sentence. I agree with the second sentence. But, I kind of doubt he ever seriously planned to take Obama of the ballot. Just pandering. I mean, Obama already published his birth certificate on WhiteHouse.gov. Now, Hawaii has sent the verification to Bennett. I think Bennett just wants this all to go away, and a bit embarrassed. He basically has said he's satisfied with it. Although, I'm sure the birthers won't be. I think it's crazy, and the information requested has already been released. But, I suppose it was just a verification email.
Rebecca: You live in Arizona, don't you? If so I'm sure you see a lot more detail on this local issue than I do. What I read was that Bennet decided to pursue this issue on his own. He didn't have to. The entire birther topic has been entirely repudiated. Its simply hogwash. The fact that it even gets continued coverage is more a function of how sensationalism gets spread through the various media these days. It has ZERO credibility. Arizona has 6.5 million people in the state. The US has over 300 million people. Bennet says he got about 1200 emails about this issue from birthers. What that really tells us is there are about 1200 people in Arizona who regardless of every fact possible they choose to believe something that has ZERO credibility. Bennet decided to act on those emails. It seems to me, he made the choice to do this on his own and he is responsible for creating the issue.
Yes. I've lived in Arizona most of my life. This is just my own personal perception, so, it may not be accurate. I think he did it for political points, it's probably a bigger issue than just birthers. It just seems like usual politics. We don't always have the best relationship with the federal government. Consider the illegal immigration issue. Arizona wanted to take further steps. Personally, I tend to blame that on the Federal government for doing a poor job. Obama reacts with a lawsuit. Antagonism back and forth. The Justice Department files a lawsuit against Arpaio. Arpaio announces he has reason to believe Obama's birth certificate is a forgery, on and on. In this context, a BC verification request isn't as surprising.
They should nominate his son for leadership of Republican party or at least a senate seat, he sounds like a true Republican.
