One of the best option for optimizing your site is to get listed in Dmoz. They are the best in their field and have a good standing.
I believe that Google pulls information from DMOZ to the point where Google is pretty much DMOZ in a different setting. This means that if you have your site submitted to DMOZ it will also be in Google. This means that you will be submitted to two high quality search engines/directories while only submitting to one.
1. Since page rank is an important feature for extreme search engine ranks that is the higher the page ranks the enhanced the chance Google discovers your web page. Google does not crawl the entirety of the ODP all that often. Google will discover your site a LOT faster if you post on a popular forum and add your link. A new page posted here on Digital Point can find its way into google within minutes... a site listed in the ODP can take days or even weeks. 2. DMOZ has a high page rank therefore it improves a website page rank assessment increase to higher levels. It is also a directory, and directories have taken a LARGE hit by google over the last several years. 3. Gigantic figure of websites is in stand in line for editor’s analysis; therefore it procures a long time to distinguish listing results due to limited editors for each category. How is taking forever to get listed a perk? 4. You will have a better page rank due to the ODP having a Rank of 8. Many inner pages of the ODP have a PR0, and many sites listed in the ODP also share a PR0. 5. All major search engines such as Google, MSN, Yahoo, Bing gets their listings from the ODP Database. LOL, not by a loooooooong shot. Just because the ODP says they do, does not mean it happens. They used too mind you, but that is simply no longer the case. 6. Increased Visibility - Since over 60% of people use Google to perform online searches for what they are looking for, a position in DMOZ can definitely increase the probability of your website coming up in search results versus your competitors. Who uses google should NEVER EVER be confused with who uses DMOZ, which if you ever do get a listing you will see just how few that actually helps. 7. Leader in Your Industry - Not just any website gets approved for inclusion into DMOZ. Only the best websites are considered and approved. It could definitely be said that your business would have an advantage over your competitor by having your website included in DMOZ versus not having it listed. If they are the leader in their industry, no wonder directories are no longer worth all that much anymore. Keep in mind Google USED to use a LOT of information from DMOZ. They used to also suggest you submit to them. Now, they do neither. They still will pull the description of a site if that is needed, but they now employ bigger and better methods of that, reserving the ODP data for times when they simply can not find a better method. In the end, if you are pulling from SEO sites that still say DMOZ is a MUST HAVE link, you need to find better resources for SEO (or check the date of the page).
I think Dmoz is King of directory, It is simple dmoz 100% human edited, other directory site are software. Dmoz High PageRank Website.
There is a site within the ODP that has not only been added by bots/software but has been deeplisted TENS OF THOUSANDS of times! They also have bots to help with the dirty work, unless it's a paying site of course... those have to be removed by hand (like the hundreds upon hundreds of CNN pages that had to be removed). They also use bots to check for broken pages listed, which are then put back in the queue. So yeah, human edited... don't believe everything you read.
Do you think it would benefit me if I put my site for Global Affairs into the DMOZ directory? It costs money right? Doesn't Google typically Shun directories that act as link farms selling links like that?
Google might do that for paid link sites but you will be ever so glad to know that DMOZ IS ABSOLUTELY FREE to suggest a site!!!
