Why do i get less traffic even if my website ranks for a keyword

    Hi,

My website ranks at 3rd and 5th spot for a particular keyword, and those keywords have monthly search volume of 2000-4000.

Despite having a good keyword ranking and good average monthly traffic, i get few visits per month from it ( to be precise i get only 20-30 visits).

Can someone explain why this happens?

    Thanks!

Sometimes your keyword position on search engines is not directly proportional to the traffic from that keyword. Also here you have said that you are not the top result for that keyword. Target variations of the same keyword. Also try to achieve top spots for all the keywords in your niche. Never concentrate on a single keyword - Google Penguin ;)

Only the top 2 on your keyword will be getting the 60 to 70% of the organic traffic... and you need to see how many exact searches for your keywords... That will help you

Are you looking at broad/exact match for the keyword?

There are three things I can think of.

    - As dcristo said, are you looking at exact search figures? Maybe you used phrase or broad matches and that "tricked" you.

    - These figures Google gives are a) averages and b) updated who knows how frequently. To double check, you can use Google Insights for Search or Google Trends, maybe the average was 2000 searches but it's decreasing lately, or maybe it's a seasonal keyword. For example, you won't get many visitors for "halloween costumes" now, and receive thousands in October / November

    - And third, the CTRs we usually read for different positions in the SERPs are averages, but your snippet (the title and the description shown by Google) can make a huge difference. If you can make your title and description compelling, you can "steal" traffic from those sites in positions 1 and 2 even though they rank higher.

    Good luck!

Well, i have exact monthly search volume of 200, so is that okay to have 20-30 visits per months. The keyword i am talking is at 3rd spot.

    Thanks!

Search volumes are often just good estimates and can't always be relied upon. Also, don't forget that your title and description can also affect clicks.

If your monthly exact searches is just 200 it's really good that you're getting around 20-35 visitors per day which would be 600-1050 visitors per day!!

The organic ranking alone can't decide traffic of your website, take my website for example, the traffic comes from search(35%), referall(38%) and direct (27%). And I once heard from some Seoers that the flow of the 1st place is 10 times more than the 2nd place. So, friends, keep going.

1 result gets 40% of the searches
    2 and 3 30% of the searches

    imagine what number 5 gets

That keyword might wouldn't have any searches. Getting ranked on the keywords that has high searches is called good SEO of a website.

Maybe, you should reconsider the keyword, try the long-tail one and use the google keyword tool. Though the mothly search of one of my keyword reaches 70-80 thousand times, and my keyword ranks in the second page. The traffic is driven by the word that hasn't been optimized. Weird, huh? There is a lot of analysis to do.

Well because the exact match is 200. No wonder you get 20-30 uv per month

I suggest that you also post article with higher exact match number. Also do social bookmarking

Most people think that once they rank for a keyword, that is it. Traffic comes and goes and it is dependent on a lot of factors. You just might need additional SEO or content to increase your traffic.

Yeah, i just had a conversation with one of the SEO expert and he said that if you rank 1 for a keyword then you can expect on an average 40 percent of the total search volumes, and that just answered ma question.

    Thanks for your input.

Yes this is true, if you are at the 1st position then you will get 40% of the search volume, similarly if you are at 11th position then it will be beneficial then 5th or 6th because there is more weight-age of clicks when you are at the 11th position.

I think you should use better title and description. When people search on SE they read your site by your title and description so if your title and description is bad your CTR is low because user don't click on your site.

You need to start with some SMO work for the website and all work on traffic oriented keywords, I don't think so you are working on traffic oriented keywords.
