How Traffic Matters the Most?

Getting traffic to your website matters the most in success of that site. As a matter of fact, its only for the traffic (which eventually may lead to sales) we strive hard, optimizing the site and promoting it. In order to rank in the top, a website needs to have huge traffic. Take a look at the figures:

    • To become a top 1,000 website you need at least 4.1 million visitors per month.
    • To become a top 500 website you need at least 7.4 million visitors per month.
    • To become a top 100 website you need at least 22 million visitors per month.
    • To become a top 50 website you need at least 41 million visitors per month.
    • To become a top 10 website you need at least 230 million visitors per month.
    • To become the number 1 website in the world? Then you need more than 540 million visitors per month.

I got these figures from pingdom, however i would like to listen to your strategies to achieve this high volume of traffic. What would you do to achieve the above traffic?

Basically you have to start with small streams of traffics, that gradually grow into rivers. To achieve traffic like this I would say the best way is viral traffic :)

But viral traffic never last for ages! Nevertheless it is one way to point huge crowd to your site. If they like it, most of them are likely to come back. Any more suggestions? :)

start tracking your visitors at launch so that you can gauge your site's growth. And it's important that your tracking tools give you specific information about what sections are most popular and how your visitors are using your site. This is even more important if you plan to sell advertising on your site.
Web traffic tools have evolved from a fairly primitive state. Many can now supply detailed feedback on which pages of your site were visited, how many visits and visitors you had, how visitors got to your site, what browsers they're using and even whether they buy anything.

I don’t understand how traffic helps in improving the website ranking... ????
But CTR and bounce rate affect your website ranking.

When you say 'in order to rank at the top', to what top are you referring? Just a simple list of the sites with the most traffic? I think most people are happy to get to position 1 on page 1 for their particular market and I'm pretty sure that would not require 540 million visitors per month for all such sites. High volume traffic is important sure, but has to be evaluated in context.

I agree with seo-hosting.com. For ranking no. 1 for your market does not require that amount of traffic.

Without a doubt some serious data there thanks for the update. Google and other search engines are constantly changing the game plan and bringing in new rules that govern traffic generation to every website out there. One remains true is the ratio you have highlighted and if we get our heads around the numbers we at least have an idea of what we need to do to see results.

First and foremost, to achieve anything of that sort would require massive resources and wealth. Some serious planning and r & d. Even then if you are lucky you might get anywhere nearby it. Sometimes negative publicity could also be a handy tool to drive traffic on some of the website.

Generating website traffic is one of the hardest things to do, sure you may get lucky and invent the next Facebook or Twitter, but for the vast amount of websites then getting traffic is not easy. Indeed a lot of people who build their own websites struggle just to get their sites indexed in Google.
