If a politician endorses anything, the perception by most is that they're 'supporting' it, whether they actually sign anything into law or propose any kind of legislation. So when I see, "Obama supports marriage equality," support is what many see. Placate is another and more meaningful word.

Distraction yes, but also pandering to certain population groups for votes as well.

He's neither supporting or endorsing it. Case in point, he stressed that this is a "personal position", and that he still "supports the concept of states deciding the issue on their own."

This runs completely counter to his position with regards to the states and health care. Currently around 44 states ban gay men & women from getting married. Obama's true position is that, even though he would have voted for gay marriage, those states are perfectly within their rights to arbitrarily restrict certain individuals to marriage rights based solely on their sexual orientation.

In other words after 3 + years in office Obama now suddenly believes that gay couples should be aloud to marry one another.

He does NOT however believe that gay couples have a right to marry one another.

This is like saying that Mexican children and white children should be aloud to attend the same schools, however if the state of Arizona decides not to allow them to do so, so what!

His statements yesterday with regards to gay marriage are nothing more than a back pedaling cop out meant to distract attention from the real problems this nation is facing, distract attention from his drunk counter part (Biden) and shift focus in a different direction as he kicks off his re-election campaign.

With regards to the states, I'm more of a conservative, so I believe in less Federal and more states rights. So, in that case, I can't actually blame him for leaving it up to the states to decide something that doesn't directly physically harm someone. However, I agree on his distractions ploy. Although, it won't matter. He'll still get the minority vote, the young vote, and the liberal vote. It should be enough to overtake all those voting for a Republican.

He's only going to get one vote and that's the stupid/ignorant vote.

He's traded a few poor black and latino voters for a few gay wealthy voters. Apparently his war chest grew by a few million dollars immediately after his announcement. When money is tight, he obviously does what he has to compete. I'm wondering if I can buy an overnight "date" with Moochelle for a few million in donations.

And gun control, and photo IDs for voters, and pretty much everything else.

And O'Nation... if you get that overnight date, please don't tell me about it anywhere near mealtime.

I would never tell you about it. I would just post the video to the internet and send you the link :D.

I'm sure Barack wouldn't mind. Rumor has it he is lighter in the loafers than John Travolta.

IOW, Obama wants it both ways, right? What a politician.

However, today there is a story that Romney was a bully in High School. Since gay and minority students are often bullied, this might contradict any damage to Obama for supporting(?) gay marriage.

It's what I have been worried about all along - Obama (or, rather, David Axelrod) is playing chess while Romney is playing checkers.

The vast majority of Americans only read headlines & listen to soundbites. Axelrod understands this.

Gotta love it, they think dredging up teenage mutant Romney stories from the 1960s is more pertinent than the current economy.

But OK... per his own book Obama was doing drugs and bullying girls in high school. If they want to talk about what Romney was doing back when the Beatles were the new guys in town... lets bring Barry Sotero's sordid little druggie past back into the limelight. I'm ok with how that comparison works out.

What would you rather have in office, a pussy?

Seriously, who gives a shit what Romney was like in HS? We all had different personality issues in high school. Then; we grow up. People change. Some don't, but for the most part people become ADULTS!

Everything he said is true about the 60's though. My dad has explained to me for years that there were gays back in high school, and even in the USMC during his tenure there. He said however that you "just kept your mouth shut" or "did not talk about it".... It was a completely different day and age.

Something tells me if more people kept their religion, sexual preferences and ideology to themselves we'd probably have a lot less problems on the social front. Most people I know don't give a shit if you are gay, straight or like to worship space aliens. What we are concerned about is living in a country whose direction is moving to the point that none of us will be able to do anything, say anything, worship anything, or be anything.

The direction we are headed is completely counter to all the equalities that people are seeking. At some point you'll not have the freedom to do so either.

It's not about who WE would rather have in office, it's about what they tell the sheeple and how they manipulate them. Sheeple only read headlines and hear soundbites. Sheeple don't think experience is important. That is how the Democrats got this unqualified Kenyan elected President.

There is a question in the book "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Universe", and it is this: Would you rather be happy, or right?

Are you saying that Republicans are going to vote for Obama? You are right but I think it is more than few since as it is obvious from just posters in this forum, there are so many closet Republicans that it can mean a land slide victory for Obama. :)

You make an interesting point. After all, Dick Cheney came out in favor of gay marriage three years ago, but obviously he isn't voting Obama. Democrats have been steadily losing the gay vote for some time, mostly because they tend to be higher income and Democrats, as a bunch of socialists, are just such horrible custodians of the economy.

No, this is more of a political ploy targeted specifically at Romney. Its no coincidence the post released its fabricated gay hazing piece on Romney within 24 hours of the president taking his new stance. There is practically nothing this president does that isn't choreographed.

The irony here is that that socialist agenda that Obama has been pushing would take away the very rights he claims should exists for everyone, and that includes gay, hetero or otherwise.

Obama had planned to play the gay marriage card about 30 days prior to the election. Unfortunately his drunk and inept VP spilled the beans and he's now both backpedaling and doing damage control. The one person that can lose this election for Obama is Biden. Watch for him to do some really stupid shit on the campaign trail as the election nears and then watch the President try to shut him up. Should be an interesting few months ahead.

Funny that just today, a CBS/NYTimes poll provided some pretty solid evidence that, by and large, the American public feels the exact the type of cynicism about Obama's motives that is expressed in your post.

The NYTimes putting something like this to press is a bit like Goebbels putting out a commentary about the plight of the Jews in 1943. If there was ever an organization that is truly "in the tank" for Obama, it is the NYT.

Other interesting factoids from the survey....

59% of people don't give a crap about the president's opinion on gay marriage, but of the minority who do, most would find it a reason not to vote for him rather than a reason to vote for him.

Romney now leads the president.... AMONG WOMEN.

What's even more interesting is that Obama who wants the Federal Government to decide how health care is mandated, but wants the states to decide individually on Gay Marriage. You can't have it both ways man.

He's for it, but really does not think its up to him or the fed, but he's for it, but he's not for it, but.. but...

Yep. Just more political expediency. Saying it is a states issue means he doesn't have to take action on it and thereby hopefully not alienate his base of black and Latino voters with his sympathy for the gay community. He's trying to close the gate after the cows already left the barn.

How sad is it when voters find Dick Cheney more credible than Obama on gay marriage.
